achieved” . St Augustine’s RC High

Tanya’s A real star

A STUDENT from Clitheroe has plenty to cele brate after picking up a bumper set of A-Levels

at Blackburn College. Tanya Townley’s dreams of becoming a journalist

were brought a step closer after she gained an A in English language and two Bs in media and psycholo gy, securing her a place at Salford University. The 18-year-old (pictured), from Tower Hill, said;

“ I’m so happy with my results; I’m still in shock from opening the envelope as I really wasn’t expecting"to

do so well.” The former pupil of Ribblesdale High School Tech

nology College was one of the top achievers at the col lege ,which had a record overall pass rate of 99.7%, and 100% success in 28 out of 29 subjects. The college also beat the national average pass rate of 97.5%. (s)

Schooi headteacher Anthony McNamara made the comment fol lowing early indications that more than 90 % of pupils have achieved five or more A* to C grade GCSEs. Mr McNamara

described the atmosphere as pupils came into school to pick up their results as “ electric with excitement” . He added: “ These results are the outcome of hard slog by our pupils, who have been supported and encour aged b y their parents • Continued on page 35

throughout what is always a difficult year for them. “They have been out

standingly well taught by committed and able teachers in a disciplined and positive school en-vi- ronment. Now, after all that effort, it’s time for a well-earned celebrationl” Bowland High School

headteacher Mr Stephen Cox echoed the senti ments expressed by Mr McNamara, adding: “I’m absolutely delighted with this year’s GCSE results. They are due to the tremendous hard work the pupils have put in over the past five years and the dedication of the staff. I ’m very pleased that we have continued to maintain our outstanding

achievements in GCSEs.” Among the top scorers

were Gerard O’Reilly at ■ St Augustine’s RC High School, Billington, who achieved 10 A* and one A along with Eleanor Bur- rill and Alicia Wade at Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School, who each achieved 10 A*. Milly McAllister, of

Brockhall Village, who attends Westholme School, Blackburn, also achieved at least 10 A* and A grades. At Bowland High

School, Grindleton, Han nah Greenwood achieved five A* and five A grades, while Amber Bradley at Oakhill College, Whalley, achieved five A*s and three As. At Ribblesdale High School Technology College

exceptional performances were recorded by Char lotte Child -with eight A* and four A grades and Katie Timson, who gained eight A* and three A grades. Headteacher Simon

Smith, said: “Once again we congratulate the achievements of our pupils. The school has achieved its highest ever pass rate. “ This could not be

achieved without the superb teaching opportu nities, guidance and sup port from our staff. I would also like to con gratulate our younger pupils in Years Nine and Ten, who tod ay also picked up some outstand ing GCSE results. It just shows age isn’t a harrier to success at this level!”
