Read crash as Earby have a cutting edge

READ surrendered second spot in the leagfie as they crashed to a 73- run defeat at Whalley Road against Earby. Great Harwood’s victory over Rib-

blesdale Wanderers moved them eight points clear of the Ribble Valley side which sets up a mouth-watering tie at the weekend as the two sides go head-to- head. Warren Eastham and Kurt Smithson

tore through the away side’s batting line-up, but were still unable to help Read avoid defeat. Eastham took 4-37 from 12 overs while the latter took 4-30 from nine overs. The visitors’ professional Ali Azmat

and Chris Walton did the damage as they put on a third wicket pairing of 89. The former hit eight fours and two

sixes from 72 balls to reach 51, while Walton stmek nine fours from 80 balls to reach 55. The score could and really should

have been much higher but a below par back end faded to contribute. Daniel Helliwell claimed nine runs

and Richard Craddock hit eight, while Aron Pollard, Stephen Hipgrave and Rory Robinson all went for ducks as Earby finished on 156. R^d went without a fight and looked

nottog like the side who had proved so difficult to beat on their way to the table’s top two. Joe Marshall top-scored for the home

side with 24 while Michael Whalley and Kyle O’Connor both hit 15. However, a plethora of low scores condemned Read to defrat as a total of four ducks and the inability of the remaining batting order to reach double figures proved costly. Meanwhile, with Read on 105-4 away at Edenfield on Sunday, play came to a

premature close as it fell victim to the rain. Read will now look to regain second

place as they face Great Harwood on Saturday in what should be an enticing Veka Ribblesdale Cricket League fix ture. Wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.

FOUR WICKETS: Warren Eastham

Champs send ‘Roe packing

CLITHEROE’S poor run of form continued against Veka Ribblesdale Cricket League champi ons Baxenden as they stay cemented to second from bottom in the table. The champions cruised

to victory at Chatburn Road with a more than convincing 10-wicket vic tory. The Ribble Valley side

batted first and were bowled out for an embar rassing 68-run total, while the visitors exceed ed that target with ease and without the loss of a wicket. Clitheroe’s away fixture

with Oswaldtwistle Immanuel on Saturday was abandoned by the umpire due to heavy rain. They will now hope to put a stop to this winless

streak when they face local rivals Whalley at home on Saturday. Meanwhile, Whalley

also fell victim to title winning Baxenden over the weekend away at Back Lana The visitors batted

first and ended the innings on 112-7. However, Baxenden

proved their cricket cre dentials when they shot to 113-6, giving them a four-wicket win. Declan Fitzhenry

smashed 34 on Sunday at home to Ribblesdale Wanderers as his side reached 100. However, his efforts

were to no avail as the match was abandoned due to the inclement weather conditions.

Point taken by new-look Chipping

Muldoons........................2 Ch ip p in g ........................ 2 NEW-LOOK Chipping began the new season with a point from their trip to the Preston Sports Arena on Satorday. The villagers drew first blood

through striker Dave Robinson. Muldoons began the second half

putting pressure on the Chipping goal, and a special effort saw them get back on level terms.

Chipping continued to battle

hard, but Muldoons managed to take the lead when a good run from the left winger saw him drift away from Dean Austin and fire past Matt Ireland. Muldoons thought they had the

game won, but Chipping weren’t finished yet and the lively Richard Bolton popped up with a late equaliser to stim the home side. Dithering in the home defence

left Bolton in the clear, and he kept his cool to lob the goalkeeper. Late in the game Chris Bury

had a half chance after being set up by man-of-the-match Jonny Fletcher, but the villagers were pleased with the draw against use ful opposition. Chipping will be tested again

this weekend when they return to the Arena to face Blessed Sacra ment.

HAVING swept aside all local oppo sition this season across the different age groups. Cobras UlOs [pictored right] took on the best of the region in the North West Street Games Festi val at Manchester’s SportCity. Emphatic victories over Pendle and

Knowsley in the earlier rounds meant that the Cobras progressed relatively comfortably to the semi-final stages. Sadly, due to the threat of rain, the

semi-final had to be abandoned and by virtue of a significantly superior net run rate the Cobras booked then- place in the final. A steely Liverpool team were the

final hurdle for the Cobras to clear if they were to be crowned North West champions and the local youngsters, cheered on by their soaked army of travelling fans, certainly didn’t disap point.

Festival success for determined Cobras Having posted a below par nett

score of 49 from their six overs, the Cobras knew they were in a real tus sle. A wicket with the first ball was followed by a magnificent catch from Tom Stones, to send the Cobras spir its sky high and it injected immense belief and confidence. Despite some belligerent heaves

from the Liverpool batters. Cobras’ skipper Eli Smith showed great matu rity and composure as he consistently speared the ball into leg stump to pre vent the 20 runs required by Liver pool in the last over from being scored and in doing so took his side to the North West title. Team Managers Farouk Hussain

and Bill Smith would like to express their thanks to Ribble Valley Bor ough Council in providing financial assistance.

★ COBRAS Girls turned in another encouraging performance despite shp- ping to a narrow defeat at Burnley. Batting first, the Ribble Valley side

found runs hard to come by in the face of some wayward bowling by an inex perienced Bumiey attack. However, they did close their innings on a com petitive score of 233, losing only two wickets. Cobras then turned in a remarkably

consistent bowling display, conceding only eight wides and no balls in 12 overs. Backed up by tight fielding the result was in the balance untU the last over, with the Cobras eventually going down by just 18 runs. For a team who are in their first sea

son of competitive cricket this was another superb effort and, with a pro gramme of winter coaching already planned and having had no fewer than 24 girls representing the club so far. Cobras Girls can look forward to an even more successful season in 2010.

A SAVAGE seven-wicket strike from Great Harwood professional Raduf Akbar rocked Ribblesdale’s rhythm and sent them crashing to defeat. It was the home side who got off to the

best possible start after their opponents had won the toss and opted to bat first. An ambitious run early on from Ian

Haworth (0) and Philip Allen (2) saw the former ran out by Marcus Pratt to put the visitors on 0-1. That soon turned to 13-2 when Allen

was caught by Mick Clarkson from an Ian Britcliffe delivery but 30 from Russell Whalley helped boost the away side’s total. When Akbar was removed for 12 the

game turned on it’s head following the introduction of Allen Armen His 69-run fifth-wicket stand with

Romain Townsend (16) proved to be the difference in a game which could have gone either way. Armer struck five fours and three sixes

on his way to 56 as his side were 120-5 on his exit.

From that point wickets fell fast as

Wanderers professional Jake Brown claimed 4-49 from 17 overs while Marcus Pratt claimed 2-23 from nine overs, leav ing Great Harwood on 144. In response, Ribblesdale made a much

brighter start but the heroics of Akbar prevented them from accumulating any kind of momentum. An opening 34-run pairing between

Ryan (lladwin (20) and Alistair Marsh (17) gave the hosts a promising start, but events went downhill from that point. The opening duo were both removed by

Akbar either side of the usually prolific Brown being thwarted for just 11 runs. Martin Briggs added 15 runs, while the

only other batsmen to achieve double fig ures was Craig Hall (17). The home side crawled past the 100

mark but on reaching 102 they were bowled out leaving them 38 nms short of a revised 140 target. Akbar claimed 7-50 from 15 overs while

Jason Kayley added 3-21. Ribblesdale, whose fixture away at

Whalley on Sunday was abandoned as they chased a 100 target, wiU now look to put this performance behind them as they travel to Cherry Tree on Saturday, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.
