TRUE stories - and old wives’ tales - about four ancient crosses in the Ribble Valley were told to Stonyhurst College pupils, parents and friends when they took part in a five-mile March pilgrim-,

Churches bear witness

A PROCESSION of witness through Clitheroe followed the town’s united service, held at the United Reformed Church and led by Rev. Norma Johnson. Members of all Clitheroe’s

churches joined together for the united service to remember the events of the first Good Friday, when Jesus was crucified. Mem bers from each church took part in Bible readings and medita tions, and the preacher was Father Tom Shufflebotham. After the service a cross was

Amazing success at egg festival

AN unbelievable success was how the organisers of the first Easter Festival of Eggs, held in New ton village, described the day, which raised near ly £750 for the village hall restoration fund. Many residents of Newton had decorated their

doorways, window-sills and gardens with chicks and chickens, eggs, Easter hunnies and in one a huge nest with enormous eggs was on display. On the village green was a giant Easter egg which had been made by three local men Brian Dixon, Stephen Cox and Richard Whitaker. Pupils from the two local schools, Thorney-

holme, at Dunsop Bridge and Brennand's Endowed, at Slaidburn, had decorated the village hall with an Easter theme. There were more than 100 entries in the com

petitions, held in the village hall, for making Easter bunnies, decorated eggs, Easter bonnets and home-made chicks, nearly all children, but some adults entered too. Winner of the competi tion to guess the weight of the golden goose egg was Jonathan Wynn and the number of eggs in a jar was Adele Bourne. The day was rounded off with an Easter egg

treasure hunt where famiies had to match the wild birds local to the area with pictures of their eggs. Eventually eveyone retired to the Parkers Arms for egg catching. Organisers Sarah Cox, Justine WUiitaker,

Marie Bennett and Audrey Spencer thank all those who helped on the day and especially all those people who turned up to make it such a success.

tine who evangelised the North, con verted King Edwin, and founded the

See of York. The Paulinus Cross may be a marker of a place where he preached. Pinfold Cross, which is believed to be

on the site of an older cross, was put up in 1834 in memory of James Wells, a ser vant at Stonyhurst, and a fiddler, who fell to his death in the nearby quarry. Cross Gills Farm Cross may have

been taken from a church. There is an old wives’ tale about a farmer whose cattle died after he threw the cross into the river. Not surprisingly, he replaced the cross

rather quickly! The cross above the river Hodder was

placed there by the Jesuits from the col lege in 1910. It is possible there was an earlier cross there.

became trapped after suffering back trouble while he was working as a contractor for Castle Cement at

its site in West Bradford Road, Clitheroe. The man became stranded while he was working in a scrubber duct at the plant. Fire crews used an aeri al ladder platform to free him.
