Peugeot’s practical magic k Grande in T

I 1

h e SW estate version of the Peugeot 308 builds on that hatchback’s strengths and, in many respects, nul lifies its weaknesses.

Reassuringly large for a car in this class

and strikingly styled, it is a far more con vincing proposition than its immediate pred ecessor, the 307 SW. Customers get to choose from an array of brilliant engines. There are no fewer than seven power plant

options. The entry-level petrol contingent employs Peugeot’s VTi technology using variable valve timing and lift to adapt the combustion process according to the demands being placed on the engine by the driver. Range highlights include the 1.4-litre

entry-level unit that produces 95 b.h.p. and at the other end of the petrol roster, the 1.6- litre THP, good for 175 b.h.p. In between, there is a 1.6 VTi with 120 b.h.p. and a 1.6 THP engine with 150 b.h.p. (or 140 b.h.p. in auto form). The diesel range consists of Peugeot’s

excellent HDi common-rail diesel engines. There is a 1.6-litre unit offered in 90 or 110 b.h.p. form and a 2.0-litre 136 b.h.p. option topping the range that will get from a stand still to 60 m.p.h. in 10.1 seconds. Although a compact estate might have an

element of oxymoron about it, the 308SW is less compact than most. Peugeot has insist ed that the SW needs to be able to seat seven with two occasional seats which can be fit ted into the rear, but these are really only any good for small children. As a seven-seat MPV, the 308 SW trails the pack, but as a five-seat estate with some

By ANDY ENRIGHT

extra space for children it is very competi- tiv& With the rear seats in place, there is 674 litres under the rear load cover, while with the rear seats removed there is a massive 2,149 litres up to roof level. The 308SW is not just a 308 hatchback

Tvith a glasshouse tacked to its boot either. The wheelbase is 100mm longer than the hatchback car, which allows rear seat pas sengers to enjoy some space. The rear overhang has been increased by

124mm to get that headline luggage bay size, while the panoramic glass roof that gives the interior such a light and airy feel has been increased by 27% . It now extends beyond the heads of second-row passengers. Access to the rear is aided by separately opening tailgate glass. Choosing a new car is never easy, and the

consequences of getting it wrong can be cost ly. The Peugeot 308 has established itself as a safe, if rather unspectacular choice, chosen by those who appreciate a stylish cabin and great engines. The SW estate version adds some serious practicality to that mix and is by far the most class-competitive 308 vari ant it’s possible to buy. In short, it puts one over on its key rivals ivith its sheer size. Choosing the right Peugeot 308 SW is not

that easy either. With some good petrol and diesel engines on offer, at least it is hard to make a bad choice. Our choice would proba bly be an HDi 136 engine if you are looking at diesel or the 1.6-litre THP 150 if you are planning on petrol power.

Now, with the development of our Containment Cell Police vehicle and Octavia Scout Paramedic vehicle, we have shoivn we have the ability to adapt our models to ideally suit the emergency services. “Thanks to the success of

both vehicles, the Skoda brand is now becoming synonymous with emergency vehicles and last year saw a significant increase in take-up. We hope to continue the success this year, especially with the launch of the new Superb.”

level 1.2-litre guise Fiat’s Grande Punto feels like a keenly-honed package. It Tvill need to be too. ’The UK super

mini market is no pushover, even for a bright young thing like the Grande Punto.

Household names like the Ford Fies

ta, Vauxhall Corsa and Renaults Clio will not be conceding ground without a fight. The Fiat needs real substance behind its style and it will need to be evident even in less glamorous versions like the 1.2-litre 8-valve models we fea ture here. There is no escaping the fact that the

Grande Punto is a good-looking car. The designers have steered well clear of grandiose statements and convoluted

detailing, keeping things fresh and sim ple.

I t works and, crucially, it does so

even on the base specification models. You do not need big alloy wheels or a set of ground-hugging spoilers to get the best out of this car visually. The core look is common throughout the range and that could be a key strength in attracting buyers to the not-so-plush derivatives. The 1.2-litre 8-valve Fire petrol

engine is the Grande Punto’s least pow erful and least expensive. If you plan on covering substantial mileages, or if you take to the motorways on a frequent basis, it may not be the unit for you. The 0-60 m.p.h. sprint takes 14.5 sec-

onds, so it is really more of a brisk jog, but far more important is the 46.3 m.p.g. fuel economy and the 145g/km CO2 emissions which combine to help keep running costs down. The 1.2-litre engine lags only 10

b.h.p. behind the 75 b.h.p.l.3-litre Mul tijet diesel, but when you compare the petrol’s peak torque rating of 751b/ft at 3,000 r.p.m. with the 1401b/ft at 1,750 r.p.m. of its oil-burning stablemate you begin to appreciate why it struggles for grunt in some situations. The Grande Punto is, after all, a sub stantial vehicle - over 4m long, nearly

1.5m high and weighing in at 1015kg in three-door 1.2-litre form. The 1.2-litre unit still manages to endow it with decent flexibility and nimbleness for urban driving, with the lightweight engine aiding manoeuvrability when compared to the heavier diesel options that tend to bog doivn the front end. Prices start at £8,550 and customers

can opt tor this engine in one of two trim levels, the entry-level Active and the Dynamic. The five-door models are £600 more expensive in each instance and Active buyers can specify the self- explanatory AirCon pack for £500.

The Grande Punto looks very well-

equipped with remote central locking, electric windows, Follow Me Home headlamps, a CD stereo and Dualdrive electric power steering fitted as stan dard on all models. On the safety front, there are twin

front airbags and three-point belts for all three rear passengers plus ABS with EBD all helping the Punto to achieve its five-star NCAP rating. The Dynam ic adds air-conditioning to the list plus alloy wheels, side and curtain airbags, body-coloured heated wing mirrors and split-folding rear seats.
