Hyundai ilk will set you back around £15,000 if you need five doors. But there is


^ another option - and I finally got around to trying it this week. Daihatsu’s Terios is priced from £12,995, only comes in five-door form and really rather surprised me.


The Practicalities It is smaller than something of the Free-


lander/RAV4 variety, but there is still space for four - or five at a pinch. But then, three children across the back is no problem - and that is what mothers will typically want their faux 4x4s to be able to carry. Fully 142mm longer than the previous


generation Terios and wider, too, this model creates opportunities that Daihatsu was unable to pursue with the old car, offering space for young families and enough style to suit twenty and thirtysomethings looking for a leisure-oriented vehicle. I thought the interior to be clean and

unfussy, with materials quality a long way removed from the old Terios and the cowled instrument panel is a very nice touch. If you are familiar with the RAV4, you will have a sense of deja vu. Large 4x4s with real off-road prowess tend


to ride and corner like the QE2 on choppy seas, but the bouncy suspension and high- riding chassis enable them to cope with the big knocks that off-road vehicles are required to take. The Terios is much smaller and nimbler on


the road, xvith ride and handling among the most car-like in the compact 4x4 sector. Body roll in the bends has been successfully curbed and on the flat, you should not be reaching for the travel sickness pills. It is one of the few 4x4s that you would


take for a drive on tarmac just for the fun of it, making the Terios notably better than its Suzuki rival in this regard and leagues better


UST what kind of compact five-door 4x4 can you really get for £13,000? Not much of one if you have your heart set


than anything from Kia or Hyundai. Fuel economy of 40.4 m.p.g. is possible on long motorway trips if you are reasonably pru­ dent with the right pedal in the manual model, while the automatic gearbox is slight­ ly thirstier with a 39.8 m.p.g. extra urban average.


Behind the Wheel This is not a car you would want to spend


hours in on a motonvay. The 1.5-litre petrol engine (unfortunately, there is no diesel option) is rather buz.^y and can get tiring after a while. The question is, just how often would you use a car like this on a long jour­ ney? For most people, this will be a second - or third - car, used for urban trips and school runs. For that kind of thing, the Terios is in its element. The handling is pretty nimble, but the


penalty for that is off-road ability that is decidedly modest. With a mere 17cm of ground clearance, the Terios is not the ideal tool to take out into the wilds, but wheel articulation is surprisingly good, and although the little Daihatsu will adopt some rather dramatic angles of lean through a gnarly off-road test course, it will manage to keep its belly from scraping too badly. Com­ pared to a big Volvo XC90, the Terios is a good deal more useful in the mud. If you can keep the Terios on smooth sur­


faces, it will do surprisingly well, although tyre choice is obviously very important, but without a dedicated low range or hill descent system, really hilly terrain is beyond its scope. (Compared to Hyundai’s Santa Fe, the


short front and rear overhangs allow a little more manoeuvrability, although the exhaust system is rather vulnerable when the modest ground clearance is exhausted. The Terios feels a little more composed and the steering is a good deal quicker when you need to flick it from lock to lock in a bid to help front wheel grip.

quite simply, fantastic value for money, yet it does not look built down to a price. 'The £12,995 entry-level figure buys you the basic S variant, but you can spend up to £15,000 on plusher versions of the car. Personally, I would not. Paying that amount rather defeats the object here.


Could I Live With One? As I have said, if all I wanted was a faux


4x4 for short commutes, school run trips or the urban commute, I would be very inter­ ested in giving this little Daihatsu a go. Enough said.

expect for a model campaigning on value for money, Volkswagen has wise­ ly fitted the Passat Highline with the more fuel-efficient engines in its line-up. The Highline looks


quietly elegant, sit­ ting on its 17in. Macau alloy wheels with plenty of chrome around the front grille and win­ dow surrounds. The Passat’s


cabin, although smart, is rather func­ tional, albeit in a clean, uncluttered fashion. Somewhat unusually for a Volk­ swagen, this could be where rivals will seek solace. The estate version


of this car offers a maximum volume in the cargo area of 1,731 litres. Adding to the practical char­ acter of this model is optional self-levelling hydropneumatic rear suspension, while a rail system in the boot floor allows more flexible secur­ ing of heavy items. As well as the 17in.


alloy rims, the High- line also gets full Vienna leather upholstery with heated front seats. Better quality car­ peting and a multi­ function steering wheel are also fitted. This is on top of


the usual Passat fit­ ments, such as air conditioning, an eight-speaker stereo and cruise control. Suddenly the


Highline looks very keen value for money, with prices starting at £18,075 for the saloon and £19,220 for the estate. The Passat is not


the most thrilling car in the world to drive, but that is not a pri-

y for many in this or who are inst- eao looking for some­ thing well built and


unobtrusively taste­ ful.


The Highline may


not bring too many radically different


customers to the Pas­ sat fold, but as a tool for converting those who are wavering, it is hard to fault.
