locals took the lead with a goal from Callum Everett following a comer. Fulledge equalised,


with a suspicion of off­ side, and then missed a penalty just before the break. In the second half, a


super finish from Toiii Riley restored the lead, before Fulledge equalised again, but a winner from referee's man-of-the- match Sean Holmes capped a deserved win.

experienced squad, with the talent and ability to give most teams in the league a run for their money. In most departments they competed


well against Chorley, however, the home team’s three quarter line was a little too hot to handle. The game started brightly for the


visitors, with trade mark probing runs from flanker Mark Curphy stoutly supported by new boy Danny Cowgill. The pack was initially slow to build


momentum and make use of the field position gained. They were punished in return by


allowing the Chorley fly half to dis­ tribute to his centres, who were talent­ ed enough to find the gaps and score four unanswered tries. Clitheroe were understandably in


disarray, and were struggling to close out the Chorley back line. However, from a neat kick over the


top, Clitheroe number 10 Declan and Kino at full back put the Chorley defence in a quandary, and in the chase for the ball that ensued. Declan was


tackled off the ball just metres short of the line for a penalty try, which was converted to bring a modicum of respect to the first half. The second half saw a change in per­


sonnel, with a number of strong replacements coming off the bench. This seemed to bolster the forwards,


who began to show some nice phases of play. They kept the ball tight, and created


a number of pick and drives from ruck. From the line out, Cowgill was


impressive, and a couple of decent driving mauls were created. Unfortunately, as soon as the ball


was passed out wide, the options were snuffed out by the well-drilled oppos­ ing back line. Undeterred, however, space was cre­


ated for the Clitheroe winger, speedy youngster Simon Gretton, to sneak in the corner for a well deserved try. This proved too little, too late to put


a dent in the handsome Chorley lead. Man-of-the-match Cowgill, in only


his second senior appearance, deserves particular mention for his mobility and all-round presence on the park. On Saturday, Clitheroe’s first team


are a t home to second place Bury, while the seconds travel to Thornton Cleveleys seconds.
