A TRACTOR enthusiast who has been repairing farm machinery for six decades has celebrated a
special anniversary. Family and friends gath
ered a t the Calf’s Head in Worston to mark Jimmy Airey’s 75th birthday. Born in Rathmell, Mr
Airey moved to a farm near Hellifield as a toddler and was initially educated at Gar- grave School before his family moved to Twiston when he was nine and he a ttended school in Downham. He bought his first tractor
- a standard Fordson - when he was 16, taking it apart six months later before success fully putting it back together. Since then he has become
well known within local farm ing circles for his skills at servicing and repairing farm machinery and vehicles. When his father retired
from farming in 1971, Mr Airey opened his own garage in Bolton-by-Bowland and he still works a five day week,
mainly v is it in g farms to carry out repairs. His 75th b ir th d ay p arty
was also held to mark his long service to the Ribble Valley farming community and the Northern Link walk ers section. Mr Airey joined singles
organisation Northern Link about 20 years ago and has been leading walks for the past 12 j'ears. According to his friend Roy
Chetham, Mr Airey often gets called “Jimmy Clitheroe’’ because to people from other p a r ts of Lan cashire that is roughly where he lives. Mr Chetham added:
“Despite his age Jimmy is one of Northern Link's fittest and keenest walkers and a very popular character.” Our photograph shows Mr
Airey enjoying his special party a t the Calf’s Head in Worston where he was joined by his sister, Nora, and his nieces and nephews. (T090308/8)
Clitheroe’s bridge win
NOW spring has arrived so has the time for the annual bridge competition between Clitheroe and Great Harwood for the Ribble Valley Trophy. The event which took place
in Whalley Golf Club, was a close nail-biting affair follow ing on from last year's closely contested event when Clitheroe retained the trophy. The Ribble Valley Trophy
is played for over five rounds, with five boards per table and going in to the las t round
Clitheroe held the lead by a mere one point. The result was still very much in the bal ance until the last table when Clitheroe came back to ivin by 11 points. "rhanks were expressed to
all the players for an excellent evening’s bridge and special thanks extended to Mr Peter Dickinson, of Great H ar wood, for organising the play, and to Mrs Julie Duffy, of Whalley Golf Club, for refreshments.
Be a blood donor
BLOOD donor sessions -will be held next Monday, March 31st, at West Bradford Village Hall. Existing and new donors are
