Bravery awards for two Valley fire-fighters

TWO Clitheroe men are among nine fire-fighters who will receive formal recognition of their courage and profes sional expertise for their part in a remarkable rescue Watch Manager Keith Cun-

liffe, currently serving at Hynd- burn Fire Station, and Fire-fight er Nick Lee, based at Blackburn Fire Station, will each receive Chief Fire Officer’s Commenda tions, together with five other firefighters. Two more firefighters, Tony

Gaffney and Shane Ramsdale, both from Blackburn, will each receive the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Bravery Medal - one of its highest honours - for their part in the rescue. The citation for the awards reads: “At 2-32 a.m. on Wednes

day, December 6th, 2006, tire crews from Blackburn were called to a fire at Jay’s Bed and Break fast Hotel, on Bolton Road, Blackburn, in which people were reported to be trapped inside. “The strong prevailing wind

and the fact that all the internal corridor fire doors, toilet windows and a final exit door were either wedged or left open caused a blowtorch effect. Fire-fighters were therefore facing rapidly degenerating conditions in which to search for survivors. “A feature of this badly-run

establishment, subsequently the subject of a court case, was the lack of a register of those resident there. This and the unreliable tes timony of those who had already made their way out of the build ing as to how many people still remained inside made the job of

TRAINING CLASSES STARTING SOON

IN 20 or 30 years’ time, more than 60 Clitheronians will be able to visit a beau tiful woodland habitat just across the border in Pendle, with the knowledge they helped create it. Pupils from Clitheroe’s Pendle Prima

ry School spent two fun-filled days help ing out a t a Woodland Trust project at a farm on the outskirts of Earby. I t aims to create a new woodland habitat of native trees at Marlfield Farm. The Year 5 and 6 pupils helped to plant

around 200 trees, including ash and oak, on the large hillside site close to Earby Youth Hostel and Birley Playing Fields. Across the UK the Woodland Trust is

busy with a five-year programme to plant 12 million new trees - one for each child in the country - and is actively encourag ing participation by schools, so that chil dren learn the value of trees. Over the two days at Marlfield FarnMR'
