ST MARY'S CENTRE, 1945 THIS photograph shows children outside Ciitheroe Parish Church Hall, and it has been sent by- ST MARY’S RC PRIMARY SCHOOL, 1956 PICTURED arc pupils at St Mary's RC School in Sabdcn in 19.16. It was submitted by Margaret

Parsons (nee Wright) whose brothers Peter, Robert and Joseph and sister, Elizabeth, are among the happy pupils seen in the yard of the old school in Pendle Street East, (s)

Mr Andrew Williamson, on behalf of Mrs Norah Williamson, who is 97-ycars-old and has lived in and around Clitheroe for over GO years. It was taken on September 1st, 1945, on the occasion of the residents of Chatburn Road Victory party.

Andrew said " I am somewhere on the photo - a very small child frightened by the huge number of unknown children".

FRIENDLY rivalry between Lancashire and Yorkshire was all forgot ten when a group of holi day-makers from Brad ford descended into the picturesque borough. The

pensioners

swopped the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales to enjoy b rea th tak in g scenery of the Kibble Valley as p a r t of an eventful five-day vaca tion. The trip came about

after Year 9 pupils from Ribblesdale High School Technology College, Clitheroe, joined forces with Fraser Eagle coach company, the Auckland Hotel, in Morecambe, and Eaves Hall Hotel, West Bradford, selling tailor-made two-centre breaks to the pensioners as part of their Leisure

and Tourism GCSE project. Rather than learning

through textbooks in the classroom, the young en trep ren eu rs set up their own holiday com pany, “Rose and Trav el”, and marketed a real holiday to the senior cit izens. For just £149, tourists

on the “C ountry and C oa s t” tr ip enjoyed a twin-centre holiday, with a guided tour of the Rib- ble Valley, including excursions and evening entertainment. They

stopped

overnight a t the Eaves Hall Hotel, before mak ing their way to the Oak- lands Hotel, in More cambe. The Kibble Valley is

steeped in heritage and during th e i r stay, the v is itors were able to explore its many hidden treasures. These includ

ed picture-postcard vil lages, Clitheroe Castle, Pendle Hill and the 14th Century Samlesbury Hall. Elsewhere in East Lancashire, they visited the Pendle Heritage Centre, in Barrowford and Boundary Mill Stores, in Colne, before soaking up th e sights and sounds of More cambe. The vis itors also

enjoyed a spooky treat when they were taken on a historical guided tour around Eaves Hall Hotel by famous Clitheroe ghostwalker Simon Entwistle.

Beautiful Mrs Dorothy

Townsend (64), of Brad ford, was among the tourists. She said: “We thoroughly enjoyed oqr trip to the Kibble Valley. I had not been to this area before and was very

\ \ ,

impressed with the beau tiful countryside, partic u la r ly around Eaves Hall Hotel. “The help from pupils

was excellent and very friendly. On the coach the pupils told us about Pendle Hill and the witches and pointed out the River Ribble.” Similar views were

expressed by 93-year-old Mr Frederick Pickering, also of Bradford. He said: “I have been

on th is holiday eight times before. “ I t ’s like coming

home! The pupils looked after me very well, espe cially d eputy head teacher Mr Davidson,

who accompanied me back to Morecambe in the coach so th a t I wouldn't get overtired. We had an overnight stay a t Eaves Hall Hotel, with dinner and breakfast.” ■ Meanwhile, coach driver Michael Banham, from Frazer Eagle, who lives in Burnley, said he was impressed with the excellent work and organisational skills of the pupils.

Comfortable He added: “The pupils

came along to the garage in Burnley and we trav elled to Bradford to col lect th e guests. The

pupils helped with the luggage, then helped to find the customers a seat and make sure they were comfortable. “They also helped to

serve tea, coffee and hot chocolate very efficient ly to the holiday-mak ers.”

Mr Andrew Davidson,

deputy headteacher at Ribblesdale High, worked closely with the children in ensuring the holiday package was a success.

“Everyone had a fan

tastic time and enjoyed themselves. There was

so much to do and see,” he said. He added he was

delighted with the way the pupils handled the project and believes gaining hands-on experi ence by getting involved in a real marketing cam paign is the best way. “The teenagers initial

ly sent out a direct mail shot to p o ten t ia l cus tomers, produced flyere to advertise the holid^K^ i and also went to Bra^*^ | ford City Hall to a civic reception where they promoted th e ir cam paign. They used their own initiative to organ ise the holiday. “The teamwork has

been excellent and the pupils have worked very professionally.”
