AN insight into Browsholme Hall, the Parker family and visitors to the venue was given by one of its guides to Clitheroe Civic Society. Mr Stanley Taylor said he was proud of his
associations with the Parker family, from his meeting with Col Parker in the 1950s until he and his wife were asked to become guides by

MP hits out at TV licence increase
THE impending rise in the cost of televi sion licences has been condemned by ble Valley MP Nigel Evans.
aH) The licence fee is due to rise to £135^o'
on April 1st. Speaking from Westminster, Mr Evans
said: “I do feel that the rise is unjustifi able. In this day and age, people should not be subjected to higher taxes for watching their televisions, particularly when more and more people are watching a range of digital channels rather than the BBC. “The TV licence fee will rise by 3%
over each of the next two years so we will see the fee rise from £131.50 to £135.50 on April 1st, then rise gradually to a max imum £151.50 in 2012. “What is staggering is that we have
been told on the one hand that the BBC will be cutting back on news and infor mation services, but on the other that this rise will allow the BBC to maintain all of its services. I t is yet another exam ple of mixed messages from a confused (jovemment. “The Government needs to look very
seriously a t other ways to fund public broadcasting - it is unacceptable that the British public has to shoulder an increas ing burden.”
Keeping your heart healthy
AN interesting and informative talk was given to members of the Ribble Valley Diabetic Group on how to keep the heart healthy. Guest speaker Dr John MacDonald, a
i ^ l
cardiology con sultant a t the Royal Blackburn Hospital, pointed out that there were many ways of achieving this and a reduced blood pressure was impor tant as this helps the heart pump blood around the body. Smoking damages the arteries, blocking the blood flow, hence heart attacks. He said Asprin helps thin the blood and reducing cholesterol levels, keeps the fat content under control. Also keeping alcohol intake to around six units per week and eating five fruit and vege- tales portions daily coupled with regular exercise regime maintains a healthy heart and gives a feeling of well-being, and hopefully a prolonged life. Dr MacDon ald answered questions from members.

WHY not put something back into the community and become a Samaritans volunteer? Information evenings aimed at
recruiting additional personnel to staff the charity’s emergency telephone lines are being held starting next week. The Blackburn-based branch of the
charity - which covers the Ribble Val ley and Hyndburn - urgently needs to recurit and train local people who
would be willing to help in this valuable work. Full training is given and the Samaritans is looking for individuals who could spare just three or four hours each week. Information evenings are being held
on Monday (March 31st), Thursday (April 3rd) and on Tuesday, April 8th at the Samaritans base at 105 New Park Street in Blackburn. For more details ring 01254 662424.

VALLEY M P Nigel E v an s has criticised Labour parlia m e n ta r ia n s over th e P o s t Office vote. He has called on residents in
Labour constituencies to show their disappointment with the vote on post office closures by using their own vote at the next general election. During a recent Prime Minis
