Blues’ unbeaten run Rimington stay top is brought to an end

Riminglon......................................6 Goodshaw......................................0 RIMINGTON stay top of the table after this emphatic win. They took the lead in the sixth

Clilheroe ...................0 Bradford Park Avenuel CLITHEROE'S five- game unbeaten run came to an'end against the UniBond First Division North's most in-form side on Monday. A bumper Bank Holi

day crowd of 447 wit nessed a hammer and tongs encounter at Shaw- bridge. The Blues were

reduced to 10 men for a third time in a month, and many a neutral was left pondering which side was vying for promotion. Tris Whitman's first

half strike separated the two sides in the end, and ensured the Yorkshire men remain two points behind league leaders Skelmersdale, but Clitheroe created a raft of chances that would have won any other game twice over. Carl Lomax had two

good chances in the open ing few minutes, and rode a Tom Baker challenge to set up a third with a left- wing cross onto the head of Jonathan Smith inside six minutes. Bradford's Paul Ged-

man should have buried a left-wing Whitman cross moments later, as Clitheroe struggled with play down that side, only for him to blaze wide. And Mann had to be quick to react to block

booked for very little, the former not long after the first whistle, and the lat ter shortly before his dis missal, while Bradford's constant infringements on Johnson went unno ticed at the other end, not to mention the blatant handball in the box that went amiss. So when Smith clat

tered into a Bradford player, knocking him clean to the floor, he did n't hang around for the decision, and went before he was sent. And to save face for the

rest of the season, having been booked twice in two games, Flannery was subbed before he suffered the same fate. Bradford put time

Gedman again when the striker anticipated a back pass and headed goal- wards. Chances were created

at either end throughout an action-packed half, which both sides were guilty of missing. Flannery missed a

clearance and Gedman was in again to fire at Mann, the Clitheroe keeper getting down to deny the visitors, before Clitheroe's best effort of the game fell to Good Friday goal scorer Anthony Johnson. Ryan Fisher split the

Bradford defence with a pin-point ball to Lomax, who instantly released his strike partner for a one-on-one with Jon Worsnop, which Johnson chipped straight to the keeper So when another left-

wing move got the better of Russ Clarke at right back, Chris Williams was in and around to find Whitman, who fired across Mann and in two minutes before half-time. The referee did very lit

tle to aid the game with his approach. Flannery and Smith were both

wasting to good use in the second half too, but despite being a man down, Clitheroe contin ued to get forward through Dave Hankin, Johnson and Lomax to the end. Having gone to a three-

man defence, Mann was called on even more to command his area and keep out the impressive Bradford substitute Mark Betts on the count er attack. Clitheroe: Mann,

Clarke, Redhead, Flan nery (P. Osborne), Smith, Fisher (Pilkington), Han kin, Kozlowski, Lomax, Johnson, Sargeson (Toronezak).

ANTHONY Johnson’s first goal for Clitheroe was a strike to savour at a wintry, windswept Lan caster City on Friday. The former Ramsbot-

tom United striker struck home a 20-yard net buster as early as the 14th minute to separate the two sides and secure the Blues' fourth succes sive maximum points haul. Craig Sargeson

chipped the ball fonvard, and Carl Lomax teed up his strike partner for an unstoppable wind-assist ed edge-of-the-box strike. Lancaster’s best effort

came just before half time when Neil Marshall split the Clitheroe defence to supply the troublesome Dave Swar- brick, whose left wing cross

found an unmarked, but off-side.

put in a solid perform ance in the centre along side Jonathan Smith to block out the opposition, which was only blighted by a very harsh yellow card for an innocuous clash of legs with Dave Foster as last man. While, back-from-

efforts in the second half came on the counter attack through Dave Hankin, as the right winger strolled more than once the full length of the pitch to deliver probing crosses across goal for Lomax and sub s ti tu te Danny Toron ezak. An unlikely five min

utes of injury time were played, but the closest Lancaster came to goal was a rasping 35-yard effort from Neil Uber- schar struck straight at Mann. Clitheroe: Mann,

minute when McLean threaded a defence splitting pass through for Paton, and even though his shot was saved, O’Neill was on hand to finish. Dinsdale made it 2-0 after a Penman

header was blocked, but the midfielder was on hand to force the ball home from close range. A ball over the top beat the defence,

and Paton’s pace took him through, and though his shot was partially blocked by the keeper, McLean followed up to ensure the home side went in at half time 3-0 ahead. Penman broke away to finish

emphatically with a left-foot shot into the bottom corner, before Paton cut in

from the left to unleash an effort which gave the keeper little chance, only the woodwork deny him a second Penman, Sayle and Dinsdale were

replaced by Hartlebury, McTear and Johns, and this gave Rimington the impetus to press on in search of more goals. McLean duly obliged when he raced

away to fire into the far corner, before an almost identical run resulted in his shot striking a post. Paton finally got the goal his indus

try deserved with a typically composed finish to make it 6-0. Kershaw had one save to make towards the end as the visitors searched for a consolation, but he spread himself well to ensure another clean sheet. On Saturday, Rimington are at home

to Colne United in the second round of the Presidents Cup, kick-off 1-45 p.m.

Green remain in the hunt

Hursl Green............2 Rock Rovers ............1 A FIRST goal of the sea son for right back Danny Taylor on the stroke of half-time set the league champions on the way to a third successive victo ry.

And the Green are now

unbeaten in 12 league games stretching back to October. The home side started

well, moving the ball around and closing the opposition down. Green peppered the

goal, with several long range efforts off target from Seedall, Oily Bolton and Danny Walker. Walker could have

opened the scoring mid way through the first half as he was played into the 18-yard box, and a right foot shot brought a fantastic save from the Rock keeper. But as both teams

looked to be heading into half-time goal-less. Tip-

ton was hauled down on the left hand side, and he swung in the resulting free kick, finding Taylor at the back post to net. As the conditions

worsened, so did the home side’s play in the second half, as they seemingly struggled to hold onto the lead. It was Rock who now

looked more comfortable on the ball, and looked potent down both flanks. Hurst Green, however,

were able to force a few set pieces, and they should have doubled their lead when a corner created panic in the box and a Wilkinson header looked to be over the line, but not given. A sense of injustice

was felt by the players, and this crept into their play when, unsurprising ly, the visitors equalised. A corner was only half

cleared, and Rock worked the ball well across the box to the right, where the

Skiplon Town...... .......................... i Clilheroe Lions.............................. fi CLITHEROE Lions produced proba bly their best-ever performance as they extended their unbeaten run to six months. The writing was on the wall for the

Yorkshire side from the first few min utes, when a succession of corners cul minated in Haworth firing narrowly wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. As the pressure mounted, the Lions

got closer to opening the scoring, and did so on 25 minutes when the in-form Conti turned a defender and hit a right foot shot into the corner of the net. The home side then came back into the game, but the Clegg brothers, Lath

am and Bank coped well with a wave of attacks. They could do nothing about the

equaliser, though, when an unmarked Skipton player put a header on target that wasn't cleared, and was then despatched easily into an empty net. However, within five minutes Hol-

unmarked midfielder side footed home from 12 yards. As the blizzard

arrived, so did Green’s heart and tenacity as they endeavoured to find a winner. Bolton had a terrific

drive saved, while at the other end Mark Young saved well with his feet, and then made an unbe lievable save low down to keep the champions in the game. This rallied the home

side, and the winner arrived with 15 minutes to go. A delightful Taylor

through ball found Simp son, who broke the off side trap and beat the keeper to the ball to net the winner. Hurst Green take a

break from league action on Saturday to face. Can berra in the second round of the President’s Cup, kick-off 1-45 p.m. at Smithy Row.

gate nodded hack a deep Conti cross for Pinard to head into an unguarded net. After a fairly even first half, the Skip-

ton team weren’t the same side in the second half against a rampant Lions team. Holgate missed two gilt-edged

chances before heading home a superb Conti free kick. He later ran onto a superb through

ball from man-of-the-match Gaughan to slot the ball past the keeper, and completed his 10-minute hat-trick by side-footing into an open net after good work from the impressive Andy Haworth. Howarth then provided Pinard with

a simple tap in to make it six, an ifc ! Lions could have doubled their with the superb attacking football that followed before the referee called time. This win, the Lion’s seventh in the

last nine league games, leaves them third in the table, with a trip to Gar- grave to come on Saturday.
