•behind the scenes a t T r in i ty have

:been looking a t its financial situa tion.'

V * Around Christmas a decision was r taken to withdraw support from the St Mary’s Centre and other savings, were made to reduce overheads. • Since the finances were critically

• reviewed and the dynamics of the operation changed, th e board has been fighting to keep Trinity afloat. Board member Ian Brown said:

“Matters were brought to a head in December and from then the board started to try and get a clear picture of . th e overall situation a t Trinity. : Over subsequent months as th a t pic

ture has unfolded it became apparent th at i t was a lot worse than we had previously thought.

. - ^ “I t was never our intention to mis

lead the people of Clitheroe about what was happening and even a few weeks ago we did believe th a t we could turn most of it, if not all of it, around, but as time went on other things came to light such as the fail ure to secure funding and th a t really was the death knell.” He added: “'We knew i t would

have been remiss of us to carry on because we would have run out of cash and th a t would have been worse. By doing th in g s th is way

. can do right by everybody. ■ “We have taken these decisions to

:: meet our obligations for the current' academic year and as far as possible to meet our obligations to our staff who have been magnificent.”

; Coun. Terry Hill, another of the •. Trinity trustees, said: “This has been a culmination of many factors and the end result is not for the want of trying, we have been desperate to find alternative options.

■ > - “What we would say is that we bit terly regret having to take these deci sions. Both the board and the staff have worked tremendously hard to t ry to keep T r in i ty going and its

. operations afloat, but we had to face . up to .th e fa c ts . T h e community . transport and environmental opera- • tions will carry on and Trinity Part-

: nership will continue to exist as a . ch a r itab le b ody from which may come a new beginning in the Ribble

• Valley. “We have h ad to face up to our

. responsibilities. We have been very concerned about the dedicated staff and for the board i t has been a drain ing experience to close down charita ble organisations, but we were faced with a ‘force majeure’ or taking deci sions which would give us some form of control.”
