just one major work. This was by another. TilTigiish composer, E. J. Moeran, described as “perhaps the greatest unsung genius of English composition”. His music is that of a uniquely beautiful lyricism, capturing feel in g and rural landsrapes in a way no other, composer ever has.” Certainly, there .was a strong folksong feeling about the music.

In all, a successful concert with good

music including some unfamiliar but very; attractive pieces.

Church setting for summer concert

THE Hepton Singers will perform a summer concert a t Heptonstall Parish Church on Saturday. I t s ta r ts a t 8 p.m. and

except for a 17th Century madrigal by Gesualdo, the programme is all music from the 20th Century and mainly by English com posers including Imogen Holst, Benjamin Britten, Alan Bush, Alan Bullard and Howard Skempton. Asa result of the most

recent exchange with a choir in Budapest Roger Scaife has introduced five Hungarian folk songs into the programme by Zoltan Kodaly composed between 1929 and 1950. . Also of interest is a work

by Alan Bush called “Lidice.” The composer

was so horrified'by the; tragedy, of the destruction on Hitler’s orders of an entire village community by German troops in Czechoslovakia in 1942 that he composed the piece as a memorial in 1947 for the Workers’ Music Associ ation Singers which he con ducted for many years. ■ The programme also fea

tures “Chorale after an old French Carol” by Ben jamin Britten. The text is by W. H." Auden and the piece was to

^.be part of a Christmas Oia-: torio on which Britten and. Auden intended to collabo rate but which never came to fruition. The piece was , not published until after Britten’s death in 1976." - - ■
