GRATEFUL family and friends have been busy r^ing money for a hospital where a five-year-old Clitheroe boy
was treated. Nathaniel Taylor suffered a
fractured skull and neck after plunging 15ft. from a bedroom window while playing at a house in Accrington in October last year.- The Brookside Primary School
pupil bounced off a wheelie bin and landed on his head on the concrete floor. ^ Nathaniel, who lives with his
mother, Laura Taylor, and her partner, Stephen Clark, a t River- lea Garde'ns, was rushed to Royal Blackburn Hospital and later transferred to the Rotal Man chester Children’s Hospital a t Pendlebu^Jr where he remained for
five days undergoing a series of tests and scans and a three-hour operation. Nathaniel is now fit and well
and is progressing -well at school. His family and friends got
together and arranged a series of fund-raising actiwties as a way of thanking the Manchester hospital where the fun-loving youngster was treated.
Thirty people took part in a
three-legged race starting from the Buck Inn, Clitheroe All the par ticipants donned fancy dress and to race around six local pubs, after which a series of fund-raising activities and a raffle were held Laura’s stepfather, Simon Kay
(43), her 17-year-old stepbrother, Luke Kay, and Barry Cunliffe
from The Social Club had their legs waxed.
: _ Friend Dave Dewhurst had his
head shaved, Phil Gawthorpe had an eyebrow -waxed and Pete, the landlord of the 'White Lion,
Clitheroe, had his back waxed. Including the money from a non-
- uniform day at Brooksade Prima ry School, a total of £1,634 was , raised. Laura said; “I am delighted.
, We had such fun on the day and the community spirit was defi nitely alive and well. ■ . “Nathaniel is recovering well
■
and is enjoying school. We had a scare back in No-vember when he was taken back to Royal Black burn Hospital and underwent a scan, but the results came back as normal.
^ - “I would like to thank everyone
who took part in the fund-raiser' and made it as successful as i t was. I would also like to thank Ruth O’Neil, the licensee of the Buck-Inn, for helping me organise the charity event.” Our picture shows, young
Nathaniel with family and friends ready for a hectic day of fund- rais'mg. (S070608/6) ,,
Witness used mobile phone ^o take picture of ‘flasher’
A PASSER-BY used his mobile phone to take a flasher's picture after he had exposed himself to a ; teenage ^ 1 in AVhalley. ■ Preston Crown Court -was told -
th a t 41-year-old Paul Sweeney, who also exposed himself t o . women on a bus from Clitheroe, had deep-seated sexual problems.
• - Sweeney of St Anne’s Street, Padiham, admitted two offences of exposure - one committed while
he was on bail. He was given a
' three-year community order, involving three years’ supervision by the Probation Service and a community sex offenders’ pro gramme. He will be on the Sex Offenders R e n te r for five years. He had pre-vious convictions for rimilar offences.
. r .. Mr David Macro (prosecuting)
said the first offence was in Janu ary this yean Sweeney was drunk when he . boarded a bus a t
Clitheroe, heading towards Padi ham. He sat at the front, oppoate
. two elderly ladies, and behaved in . a sexual maimer in clear -view o f . the women, who were outraged. A woman in her 60s boarded the
bus, unaware of what had been taking place. He p u t an arm . around her and went on to expose himself agmiu She told him to get off her. The bus driver noticed a police car while driving through. ■Whalley and two officers boarded . the bus and arrested Sweeney..,
/ ■ Sweeney was on bail for tha t offence when the other offence was : committed in February a t Whal ley bus station. A 19-year-old girl sa t in a bus shelter sensed the defendant looking intensely a t her. She tried to ignore him, but a few
. minutes later she realised he -was exposing himself, -wlule still look- . ing straight at her.
: “She was alarmed and dis
tressed. She told a male passer-by and pointed out the defendant to him. The passer-by approached the defendant and took a picture of him on his mobile phone and then rang 999,” said Mr Macro. • “As the girl got on the bus, the
defendant jogged towards it, but the driva" closed the doors to stop him getting on. The defendant ran . towards another bus, but the pass-
. er-by stopped him getting on it. He follow^ him as he ran ofL” . Miss Clare Thomas (defending)
- said Sweeney had some deep-seat ed problems and-was struggling to come to terms ■with them. - . Of the offences, she said: “He
knows they are completely unac ceptable and that he needs help. Tlus is the first time he has spent time in prison. He is extremely
■ amdous to take advantage of help available froni the Probation Ser- -vice. He is now a difierent person.”
