Sarah crowned rose queen at festival
A VILLAGE festival encompassed the crowning of a new rose queen for St Leonard’s in Langho.r,.
,
■ The newly appointed royal was Sarah Bryan who took over the post from retiring rose queen Gabrielle
Chamley. The day began with a warm, sunny morning, which
helped towards the early preparations. Despite sprin kles of fain and small gusts of wind, £1,250 was raised towards the £70,000 plus per year needed to keep the church doors open. The rose queen festival started with a parade from the vicarage in Whalley Road,. Billington, and was followed by the rose queen crown ing in the church. • An afternoon of field events followed to mark the special occasion, including a raffle, games and a vari ety of stalls. The Mayor and Mayoress of the Kibble Valley, Coun. John and Mrs Phillipa Hill, attended
the festivities. Pictured left is rose queen Sarah Bryan, (s); Pictured during the festivities is four-year-old Ryan

SIX members of Clitheroe Ram blers' Association set off for-. ■ Glenridding on the west side of Ullswater in the Lake District. There they met up with four
more members to climb Eng land's third highest mountain. . Eight of the members climbed
Helvellyn via Striding Edge and enjoyed a short break in the sun shine near Red Tarn. Easy scrambling soon brought.
them to the summit of Striding • Edge where the weather was ■
much cooler with a westerly wind. Progress along the ridge was slightly hindered by the number of people heading for ' Helvellyn and a few runners . coming off the mountain. Most of the group, led by
David Taylor, chose the higher route along the edge before tack ling the final scramble down the 15 ft chimney over the huge rocky outcrop and up the stony path to the summit ridgi It was a gentle stroll past the
Rampaging youth trying to ‘dull pain’ of breakdown'^
AN 18-year-old youth caused more than £1,100 worth of dam age to two shop windows in Clitheroe town centre during a drink and drugs fuelled rampage. Blackburn magistrates heard
that Nicholas Alexander Johns was arrested and charged with smashing the windows in King Street, but the next day he returned to Clitheroe and after more drinking and taking diazepam tablets he broke into one parked car and stole a CD player and then took another vehicle. Johns, of Eastock Close, Black
burn, pleaded guilty to causing £700 worth of damage to the \vin- dow of Harry Garlick’s electrical shop; £400 worth of damage to a window belonging to solicitor Keith Bagot; taking a car without consent and theft of a CD player and CDs belonging to Jason Crossley-Haworth. He was remanded on bail for the prepara tion of a pre-sentence report. Miss Catherine Allan (prose
cuting) said a woman resident heard a loud bang outside and looked out to see the window of

the television shop smashed and Johns walking away. She went out because she was
worried about her car and she saw Johns throw a bottle a t the win dow of the nearby solicitor’s offices.
■ ■ When he was arrested Johns
was clearly under the influence of something and collapsed in the custody suite. Miss Allan said during the fol
lowing day’s offences Johns caused £700 worth of damage to the car he took and £400 worth of dam age to the other vehicle. Mr Jonathan Taylor (defend
ing) said that over a period of 24 hours Johns had acted in an incredibly stupid manner. “He went to meet friends in
Clitheroe and as well as drinking alcohol took some diazepam that were being handed round,” said Mr Taylor. “After that he has very little
recollection of what has taken place. He repeated the behaviour after his release and says his behaviour is against a background of a breakdown of a relationship. He was trying to dull the pain.”
trig point at 3,116 ft and down the ridge towards Raise where lunch was taken in warm sun shine overlooking Brown Cove, ■ with clear -views to the northern Pennines and Ullswater. The return was via Whiteside
at 2,832 ft, past Smelt Mill Chimney to eventually pick up the Sticks Pass bridleway past the Greenside Lead Mine. The two remaining walkers .
had a quiet walk through Pat- terdale back to Glenridding.. ,
