Rushton is the star as Read win cup thriller
' READ held on to win a thrilling Ramsbottom Cup quarter-final at Baxenden on Sunday by just four ' runs.
After Jon Harvey’s side had posted a total of 242-8 in their 48
. overs, the hosts required 11 runs off the final over to prevail. Andrew Rushton took the ball,
but when Szliatoszlavek hit his first ball for six, Baxenden looked well on their way.
‘ Rushton then bowled a dot ball,
before his next delivery saw Szliatoszlavek out to a brilliant catch from Harvey at mid wicket. The batsmen crossed, seeing
Gary Sudworth facing the next ball, which again was a dot ball. ; ■
Sudworth, however, looked to
have won the game off the next ball as he opened his shoulders and looked to have crashed a six, only for the ball to catch on the wind, with Warren Eastham tak ing the catch on the boundary edge to earn a place in the last four at home to Ribblesdale Wan derers on July 6th.
, Earlier, Sudworth and Rushton
had again been the centre of attention, in an over that also had a big bearing on the outcome. ■ Read stood on 21E8 going into
their.last over, with Sudworth returning to bowl after earlier tak ing 1-28 off nine overs. ' Elliott Lowes hit a single off his
Andrew Rushton ■
first ball, and Rushton crashed the next five deliveries for six to finish unbeaten on 57 - his 50 coming off just 26 balls. Baxenden had won the toss and
inserted Read, with Harvey the mainstay of the innings, compil ing a superb 89 against his former club before being bowled by ;Dominic Bulcock. His 50 came off 76 balls, with
four fours and a six, before ploughing on to 89.
-v Other . batsmen got starts, '.including openers Nick Marsh
,
y (18) and Michael Whalley (12), with Kyle O’Connor (13) and
. Andrew Turner (22) also in dou ble figures, before Rushton’s hero- ics, as Read finished on a more--
; than-competitive 242. Read made an immediate
breakthrough in Baxenden’s reply, as Lowes bowled Callum Waddington for a single, but .David Parkinson and Ashar.
, Zaidi, substitute professional from Bolton League side Greenmount, set about building the founda tions. Rushton took the first of his
four wickets to see off Zaidi for 39, but half-centuries from Parkinson (51) and the typically belligerent Ian Austin (56) pushed Bash, towards the finishing line. • Bulcock also added 44, with
Sudworth making 22, before his late bid to win the game ended in failure. ■ Read’s league game on Satur-. day at home to Oswaldtwistle was abandoned without a ball being bowled, with both sides taking . three points each. Tomorrow, Read are at Padi-
, ham in twenty/20 cup action (6- 30 p.m.), before a trip to Earby on Saturday (1-30 p.m.).
Whalley are their own worst enemies
ON what can only be described as a minefield of a track at the
, Arbories, Whalley have only themselves to . blame for not making the semi-finals of th e . Ramsbottom Cup. The Station Road side
let Padiham of the hook at 66-4, allowing them ■ back into the game, end ing up chasing 216, which should have been within their grasp at 132-2 with more than enough overs left. ■ , Padiham professional Kashif Siddique made ■ his intentions clear by blasting from the start, but he fell to a Rajagopal Sathish-like catch from Callum Mahon for 27 off just; 13 balls, before Umar Saddique joined . him three runs later on 32.
Lee Anderson was
next to go fora duck on 41, and Pete Usher added 17 before Sathish - bowled himat66.:: - Anthony Hall and opener Abdul Saddique

set about rebuilding the innings, before the latter was run out for 50. Peter Shirtcliffe helped
Hall take it to 206, ■ before Hall fell for 69 at 206 and Stephen "The Councillor" Booth cleaned up the tail with three quick wickets. Pick of the Whalley.
bowling was Neil Cord-' ingley with 3-34 off his allotted 10 overs. After the break, Mar
tin Davies and Richard Palmer got Whalley of to a great start, despite the horrors of the track, and were most unfortu nate to lose Davies to a run out for 33, with the score on 55. ■ , Sathish never looked
at home on the wicket, and got a shocker, that shot along the deck as he went for 10. Meanwhile, Palmer
was playing a' real cap tain’s innings a t '' the other end, and-when Cordingley joined him, :; Whalley must have been favourites, but a break
■for rain seemed to inter rupt their flow, and Cordingly fell for 17. : . Shortly after. Palmer
went for a fine 58, and the gamblers would still have backed Whalley.
. Lee Kearsley went for a swift 20, and Mark Fallon looked like seeing the visitors home, but he was stumped for 35 off' 36 as Whalley needed 23 from the last three overs. But they could not'get

the- ball away,: and Declan Fitzhenry and John Rain fell for what would have been sixes if they had been a foot: either way of the fielder. - Whalley;will regret
missing the opportunity, to progress into the semi finals, and look to the twenty/20 as their only hope of honours when they visit Ribblesdale. tomorrow, before travel-' ling to Cherry-Tree on ' Saturday in the league. ■

Joe fires Wanderers into semi-final derby
JOE Scuderi fired Ribblesdale Wander ers into the last four of the Ramsbottom Cup. 'The Church Meadow professional smashed an unbeaten 135 at more than a run a ball as derby rivals Clitheroe were beaten by 54 runs.
. -. Gary Hunt also weighed in with an impressive 75, as Wanderers cracked a run-rate in excess of six per over. • But it was Scuderi who carried his bat
throughout the innings, smashing 19 fours and two sixes to post a total which proved to steep for Clitheroe to climb. ' Scuderi’s knock came off just 127 'balls, but with his side batting first, he
..lost
his.opening partner early as Stephen Kerr holed out to Michael Dewhurst off Mark Hargreaves for just sbc.
■ • Martin Peel hit two boundaries before . he departed for 13, while Martin Briggs was largely patient in his innings, but still managed to hit two sixes. -
: '. ‘ But it, was Hunt, alongside Scuderi, • who helped carry the total out of sight
: of their visitors, as he hit eight fours and : .two maximums in an explosive 75. ■ : Many of the Clitheroe bowling attack came in for punishment, not least Danny Glover, who was cracked for 73
' in his 10 overs. ■ He did manage to pick up the wicket -
■ Saturday’s home game with Earby was aban doned, with both sides taking three points each. ■
- of Hunt having got one through the gate,- but David Howard picked up the " baton to hit 11 off just-three balls before'
being run out off the final ball of the innings.
A total of 289-5 was always going to
be a daunting prospect for Clitheroe, and it looked more so when Neil Bolton was caught by Hunt off Scuderi for seven. Peter Dibb played cautiously for his
17, hitting just one boundary before he was trapped in front by Howard, while Dewhurst (1) was run out by Martin Peel having faced just one delivery. But the turning point of the innings
came when professional Paul Turner, who had cracked 10 fours annd two sixes in a 76-ball knock of 73, snicked a Hunt delivery behind to wicket keeper Russell Bradley. Wickets fell at regular intervals from
that point on, with Glover (9) and Carl Palmer (11) both removed by Hunt. - ; Matthew Coulter did send Wanderers
, nerves jangling with a half century, but • he was out soon after for 51 off 64 balls. ' And time.ultimately ran out on
Clitheroe, as the run-rate grew, and two run outs at the death, that of Mark Hargreaves (5) and Graeme Kershaw (30) saw them dismissed for 235. And Wanderers will now face another
local derby in the last four, as they pre pare to face Read. ' Wanderers and Clitheroe were ai£jfe
due to meet in the league on Saturdays but the conditions saw the match aban doned without a ball bowled.'' ■ • ; ' ^ And the pair will hope for better on
Saturday, with Wanderers entertaining Edenfield and Clitheroe travelling to Settle (wickets pitched 1-30 p.m.-).'-.'.
