v-clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk Cheers to the bangers! - by Duncan Smith '
BEERY bangers boasting two of Ribble Valley’s finest “homegrown” products are proving a h it with sausage connoisseurs. Jim Bearj', owner of family-run
Ribble Valley Meats, has teamed up with the award-winning Rowland Brewery to create the first Rowland Beer Banger. The sausage, which has sold out
• when trialled at various farmers’ markets throughout the county, was also showcased at the Garstang Show, the Aston-under-Lyne Farm ers’ Market (the largest in the North) and the Edinburgh Foods Festival, before hopefully being rolled out to pubs, restaurants, farm shops, delis and even supermarkets. -■\s both pig farmers and brewers
feel the effects of rising wheat and barley prices, Jim struck a deal with
Richard Baker, owner of the Row land Brewery, to create a sausage which encapsulates all the best qual ities of Jim’s succulent Gloucester shire Old Spot Pigs and the brew ery’s bestselling “Hen Harrier’-’ale' :
; With the price'bf pig feed almost • doubling in the past year, it is esti mated that farmers are losing on average around £27 per pig, with many breeding sows having to be killed ^ l i e r than usual. Farmed near Clitheroe, Jim’s pigs
are free range and have the freedom, opportunity and space to express their natural pig behaviour. As well as theirusual feed, the pigs
also receive the odd pint just to help them relax and stay happy to pro-; duce distinctive, succulent sausages. ^ The pig-beer partnership' h ^ lipt
only helped Jim create a unique sausage, but has also helped with his feed costs as the pigs are now being fed on the waste by-products from
the brewing process; As pigs taste of what they eat more than any other animal, the Rowland Beer Bangers really benefit from this diet, making them the ultimate beer sausages. - Jim (28) commented: “The
increases in feed_have been astro nomical ^ d as a business it has bran hard to take. But just like any other business, you have to be innorative and think of new ways of getting out of the rut and increasing sales. “These beer bangers are our way
of doing that. “So far the bangers have been
received extremely well and we are already working on a couple of new' recipes using some of Rowland’s other brews.” . Established in 2003 at Bashall
Town, the Rowland Brewery has made a name for itself as a high-class producer of hand-crafted real ales. The popular Rowland range of beers has won numerous aw’ards at
