Ramblers experience towering sights

Golf Club. Being careful to avoid golf balls, the walkers descended to Sunnyhurst Woods for refreshment at the visitor

THE sun shone on 15 Clitherbe Ram blers as they set off from Roddlesworth car park, where 100 years ago Hollinshead Mill, owned by Eccles Shorrock, stood. They went past Ryal Farm and on

■ centre - alas it had not yet opened for the day. Sunnyhurst Woods were planted originally for game birds, but now boast a lovely area for families to enjoy a picnic. Then came a steep climb over a

stony path to Darwen Tower. Dark clouds appeared and a sudden down pour meant waterproofs had to be taken out of rucksacks. •

Undaunted, the walkers tramped , ■

through the lovely heather moor notic ing the tall chimney of India Mill (another of Eccles Shorrock's mills) in

the'Valley. At Duckshaw Clough, the sun came

out, with clear views of the Lancashire Plain, and Blackpool Tower was spot- ted.- ■ Stepback Brook was so named when Cromwell’s troops marched over the moors from Manchester to Preston. The commander'ordered that they “step back”, to fire cannon balls at Hollinshead Hall. So, back to where the walkers start

ed after passing some cottages once the home of the workers at Hollinshead Mill (now demolished) and where ram blers now park their cars.. Pictured are the remblers with Dar wen Tower in the background; (s)

. entered the first race in 1966 when he finished in 39 minutes, but he smashed th a t time this year finishing in 35 min utes. He said: “I had a feeling

I would do well because I swim regularly in Clitheroe. This time I had a wetsuit as well - 1 don’t think they were invented back then! “It was still quite hard work and pretty cold, but

it was a great atmosphere and there were lots of peo ple taking part. I finished f irst in my age group, although I’m sure I must have been the oldest com petitor.” Mr Doney, of N utte r

Crescent, Higham, raised £340 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. He is now planning

another charity swim called the Channel Swim, covering a to ta l of 22 miles (the equivalent of swimming the English Channel) in a series of ses sions. He will a ttempt this

challenge at Stonyhurst College’s pool.

Chiaiice toVget a taste of Backridge

A WORKING farm, which has been transformed into a haven for local designers, manufacturers and crafts men, will host an open weekend on Saturday and Sunday, to officially launch its new cafe/restaurant.. Taste@Backridge, is the hew addi

tion to Backridge Farm, which is located off Twitter Lane, Wadding

ton. The new venture incorporates an

organic cafe, bakery and deli that will aim to showcase local produce. Meanwhile, the restaurant will offer

a fine dining experience, with cus tomers able to choose from a range of fine wines and quality local beers. Farmer Richard Drinkall was

forced to diversify after the foot and mouth crisis and transformed his redundant outbuildings at Backridge into retail outlets selling a huge range

of products. These range from arts and crafts, porcelain and pottery, swings and slides, Wellingtons and waterproofs and specialist children’s toys, to name but a few. The open weekend, which will have

many special attractions including the opportunity to take a helicopter flight, will be held between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sun day.

Homebase: no date yet for opening

DESPITE growing con cern in the community, DIY giant Homebase is still unable to confirm an opening date for its new Clitheroe store. Ribble Valley residents

keen to apply for jobs at the Queensway site have been left puzzled by the lack of any visible recruit ment drive. Back in February, boss- .

es said the store would open in October and con firmed it would create around 50 new full and part-time jobs. But despite work on the

store appearing complete, for the second time this month a Homebase spokeswoman has said the company could not con firm an opening date. “This is one of a num

ber of stores in the new store programm& Howev er, as yet, no firm plans have been agreed with regard to the opening and at this stage we are unable to provide more informa tion on opening dates,” said the spokeswoman.

Have say on skatepark

SKATEBOARDING enthusiasts are being invited to a meeting next week to have their say on the future of Clitheroe Skatepark. The meeting will be

held on Tuesday at 7-30 p.m. at The Grand, York Street, Clitheroe. I t will be hosted by Tim Fun- nell, skate services man ager, who said: “This meeting is being held to discuss current projects, including the mobile skatepark project, which is to be laimched hopeful ly in the New Year. “Other items up for dis

cussion include funding for subsidised skate trips, an open discussion to look at future developments, including ideas for fund ing the constant damage being done to the park, and chances to even improve it.”
