JOBS are being axed as the credit crunch hits one of the town’s biggest employers. Castle Cement has told its staff that jobs will

be cut to secure the future of the firm, which • employs around 250 workers at its Ribblesdale site. In its heyday - in the early 80s - the cement giant employed more than 700 members of staff. The move is being blamed on intense competi

tion, a downturn in the UK economy and a dump in the construction industry. Workers were left reeling by the bad news ear-

■ her this week. It is uncertain at this stage what the total

workforce will be reduced to, however, Mr Gary Young, general manager, revealed in total 20% of staff will be made redundant across all Cas-

. tie Cement UK sites and depots. Mr Young was unable to disclose-the number

of workers that will be made redundant from the Ribblesdale site, but he confirmed that the cuts will mean a reduction in the number of drivers

and support staff. Production staff will not be

affected. , In a statement released bn Tuesday, Mr

Young said: “The acute downturn in the UK economy and the resultant slump in construc tion activity continue to have a severe impact on the Hanson business, of which Castle Cement is a part. “Volumes have fallen dramatically, competi

tion is fierce and there seems little likelihood of any significant improvement in core markets

until 2010. “As a result, it has been necessary to take , .

steps to cut production capacity and reduce overheads.

; - “This will involve a reduction in cement capacity, which will occur at the Ketton site in Rutland, where the smaller of the two kilns will cease operation for the foreseeable future. “In addition there will be a 20% reduction in

manning levels -within the distribution di-vision of Castle Cement; this will apply across all sites and depots.” As we went to press yesterday, the Clitheroe.

Advertiser and Times was unable to obtain a comment from a workers’ representative. •
