LOCAL dairy fanners turned out in force for the September dairy show and sale at Gisbum Auction Mart. Almost 50 cattle were on offer, to

include an entry of very smart young dairy cattle, with buyers pres ent from all over the North-West.

Auctioneer Fred Spurgeon report

ed: “In general, prices were down - dairy farmers are now really strug gling with the effects of a continuing wet summer. However, strong cull cow prices and dairy companies offering bonuses for autumn milk

should help the market price firm for the foreseeable future.” Topping the trade were Messrs.

Whitwell and Sons at £2,100, with a newly-calved heifer which sold to H. A. Bradley, of Salterforth. Other newly-calved heifers forward from

the Whitwell family achieved £1,730 and £1,660, selling to Frank Wrathall, of Gisburn, and G. H.^ Speak, of Eccleston. Next best in the bidding stakes

was T. A. Crook, of Houghton, sell ing a newly calved heifer at £2,060

to David Hancock, of SandlflliJ Cheshire.

-p' ’I Regular vendor Peter Dakin, ofl

BoIton-by-Bowland, sold a very talll Holstein Friesian cow for £1,920.1 Also matching this price was Stuartl Fairclough and Son, of Radcliffe,| Greater Manches-I ter, with a heiferl just a week calvedl and giving 28| litres.

in the young stock! section saw Jack! Moore, of Bury,! achieve £810 twice! for a pair of Hol-| stein Friesian year-1 lings. Taking themj home was heiferl rearer David! Graveston, ofl
