R im in g lo n ...................5 Carlelon ..................... 0 CRAVEN Cup holders Rimington began their defence with a comofrtable win thanks to four first half goals. Rob Lloyd got things

started after 15 minutes when he collected the ball 30 yards from goal, turned and fire a screamer into the top corner. The home side played at

a pace their guests strug-, gled to match and several chances went begging before Tom O’Neill was sent through after Lloyd and Penman combined well, and he calmly lobbed the ball over the keeper. A Lloyd strike was par

ried by the keeper and the ever alert Dinsdale reacted quickets to force the rebound in before Michael Walsh rounded off a fine half with a shot from 20 yards which flew into the bottom corner. The second half proved

to be something of an anti climax as Rimington eased off and played with no real intensity. Danny Anderson was

forced into making a cou ple of excellent saves and then Rimington upped their games to seal victory. Lloyd had a penalty

saves, Heslop saw a great effort blocked by the keep er, but he scored the final goal when th e keeper missed an attempted clear ance and Heslop rolled the ball into the back of the net. Rimington re tu rn to East Lancashire League

. action on Saturday when they make the trip to Rock

Rovers. Goodshaw ...................... 0 Riminglon Reserves . .7

' THERE were more new faces in th e Rimington

line-up with keeper Ryan Peel making a great s ta rt by keeping a clean sheet on his debut. Rimington s ta r te d

b r ig h t ly and took th e game to Goodshaw and Sharpies should have made th e pressure count b u t chipped the ball just over the bar. Rimington did take the

lead on 17 minutes when Carter held off a defender to lay the ball to Sharpies. His neat first touch and pass fed Leach who slotted the ball into the corner! Rimington soon added

to th e tally on 25 when Carter bundled in a Leach cross. Carter soon grabbed as

Walmsley fed a perfect pass though the back line for Carter to smash into the bottom left hand cor ner. Rimington

soon

grabbed a four th when Hall fed Carter and his quick one-two with Shields put him through on goal and he took his chance well with a neat finishfor his second ha t- trick in 2 games! Goodshaw tried to claw

th e ir -way back in to the game a t the s ta r t of the second halfand soon forced a save from debutant keep er Peel.

Butr there was no stop ,

ping Rimington and a cross whipped over by Leach was met by the head of Shields to make it five. ■Walmsley got on th e

score sheet on 70 minutes and not long after the scor ing was complete as strik er Threlfall was bundled down in the box and he calmljYSojjj^yerted. th e resulting peh'alty. The second string are at

home to Stacksteads on Saturday. •

THERE was a feast of cricket at a sunny Church Meadow on Sunday. The Clitheroe and District MidWeek

Cricket League held their two cup finals - and the four teams involved did not disap point. The first final saw the two Chipping sides

compete for the Bradlow Trophy. Batting first, Chipping R^blers made

an exceiient start with both openers retiring with scores of 30, and at 72-0 from 11 overs, Ramblers looked on course for setting a score of more than 120. However, with some tight bowling and

some poor shot selection. Ramblers reached a competitive 104-8. * In reply. Chipping A made a slow start

and were soon losing wickets With none of their recognised batsmen reaching 30, it was left to the tailenders to lead the way. With 16 runs needed off the last two

overs and nine runs from the last over, the Chipping A batsmen eased home with three balls to spare. In an exciting finish. Chip ping A ran out xvinners by two wickets. In the Mike’s Sportsworld Challenge.

PLAYING only their sec ond game of the season, Chatburii handed a debut to defender Ben Dewhurst who adds a bit of steel to a sophisticated defence. Straight from the-kick

off Chatburn took the game to the opposition and within minutes they were ahead, when Fallon chest ed down a high ball and neatly laid it into Dolan’s path, who hit a screaming first time shot which was tipped on to the bar. With the ball loose and

the goalkeeper struggling to gather i t , Holgate pounced, slipping the ball under the keeper to get his first goal for the club. Holgate also had a hand

in the second, when he took the ball out wide and delivered a great cross to Fallon, who's first touch slid it into the bottom cor ner.

With a two-goal lead

Chatburn took their foot of the pedal and, a f te r missing a h o st of chances,Wilsden clawed one back from a poorly defended corner. Chatburn s ta r te d the

second half brightly but again struggled to convert their chances and paid the price when a rare goalkeep ing error by Braithwalte p u t Wilsden back in the game. But this only provided

Chatburn with the spur they needed. They quickly took the lead again when Richard Sullivan found space on the wing and his floated ball was met by Holgate’s powerful header. Minutes later Holgate

secured his hat-trick and th e man-of-the-match award, when Sullivan delivered a pinpoint cross which gave Holgate the space" to take a touch in the box, and with a striker of

.his quality he needed no second invitation, slam ming the ball into the back of the net. Determined defending

saw Chatburn hold on until the final few minutes when Wilsden scored from a sloppy throw-in. However Chatburn held

strong to claim their sec ond win from two games.

Cup, Sabden took on Rimington on an improving wicket. Sabden batted first and made scoring

look easy, with Dibb retiring on 30 and Wright, 27, before becoming the first of Tim Le-Breton’s four victims. At 70-0 from nine ovels, Sabden were on

course for a large total. However, with Cor- mack taking 4-12 from his five overs, and 2- 11 from Binns, the Sabden innings tailed away to 112 all out from 25 of their 30 overs. In reply, Rimington made a slow start,

loang both openers with only 22 runs on the board. Davies then made 34 retired to put Rim

ington on top before losing three quick wickets, putting Sabden back in the game, Dunderdale taking an outstanding catch in the outfield, worthy of any catch of the sea- son award!

•. It was lef t to Gaskili (22) and Rimington

skipper Binns to help Rimington home with five wickets and four overs to spare. Special thanks should go to the grounds

'• staff at Ribblesdale Wanderers who worked hard to ensure the finals day went ahead.
