should have no difficulty with the Sirion. No, scrub that. I ’ve been into some pay­ phones that are a whole lot trickier to figure out than a Sirion. All the controls are legi­ bly marked, the steering is light and the ride is surprisingly supple for a small car. The manual gearbox probably isn’t as direct as it could be and the windscreen pillars can be intrusive when negotiating tight round­ abouts but other than that this is an extremely easy car to drive. Performance from the 1.0-litre engine is best described as unhurried, the 68bhp unit getting the Siri­ on to eOmph in 13.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 99mph. Though a little noisy at speed, the off-beat three-cylinder thrum is deeper and more characterful than the rather anodyne engine note of the 1.3-litre model and for that reason alone, it would be my pick. The fuel consumption is not to be sniffed at either, the 1.0-litre managing a combined total off 56.5 miles per gallon.


Carbon dioxide emissions are pegged at a lowly 118g/km. There’s certainly no shortage of head-


room inside the Sirion. Six footers should find no issues in either the front or the rear and legroom is also surprisingly good. It’s even possible to adjust the rake of the rear backlit. Naturally this abundance of cabin space comes at a price and rear luggage space isn’t the best. Like most modern superminis, the Sirion features a multitude of cup holders, stowage spaces, trays and cubbies and.it also includes a split level glovebox, neither compartment yielding much in the way of useable space. Rather surprisingly, the seats are firmer than you’d expect and give good support. ■The Sirion might be a slightly left-field


choice if you’re looking for a city runabout but it is still one that makes characterful sense. An amazing proportion of owners buy another - which probably tells you a lot of what you need to know if you’re looking at a car of this type. Overall, worth an extra place on your shopping list. .

Others are prohibitive­ ly expensive and come with the kind of bling styling accessories and luxurious interiors that do not respond well to being dashed against rocks or caked in mud. , That only leaves models like the Toyota


Land Cruiser, a 4x4 which actually fits the off-road family car role like a glove.


The Practicalities Equipment levels are very generous. The


LC4 and Invincible grades receive a more sophisticated satellite navigation system equipped with ETA Electronic Traffic Avoidance. This monitors real-time traffic , information -via an FM radio si^al, detect­ ing delays on routes programmed into the sat-nav system, in turn offering the driver an alternate route skirting the jams. If that is not enough, the flagship In-vincible model includes all this plus a DVD in-car enter­ tainment system. Loading the top-of-the-range model to the


gunwales is all well and good, but Toyota has also spread the good news across the rest of the line-up. All Land Cruisers now get cruise control and a passenger seat-belt warning indicator. LC3 models benefit from a leather- trimmed steering wheel and gearknob set, while LC4 and Invincible versions are fitted with a wheel cover for the tailgate-mounted spare. The LC2 model, previously the entry point into Land Cruiser ownership, has been deleted from the range.


Behind the Wheel You have to adihire the Land Cruiser’s


focus. At a time when manufacturers are intend on offering us 4x4s that handle like coupes or have interiors with MPV-style flexibility, the big Toyota sticks to its guns in offering real off-road ability in a ruggedly practical package This is a proper old-school 4x4. It means

the Land Cruiser will be your idea of heaven. With class-leading ground clearance and a whole raft of high tech electronic aids, you will need to be pretty determined or breath- takingly hamfisted to get one of these stuck. The Downhill Assist Control (DAC) is Toy­ ota’s take on Land Rover’s Hill Descent Control, a system which ensures that when negotiating a tricky downhill slope, the vehi­ cle never exceeds brisk walking pace. Instead of leaving it at this, Toyota has


reversed the thinking and become the first manufacturer to introduce Hill-start Assist


Control (HAC). This detects when the vehi­ cle i^slipping backwards, or wheelspinning when s tr in g on a gradient, and automati­ cally feathers the brakes and throttle to maintain an easy getaway.


Value for Money If you are going to drive it about town
