to kick-off and Clitheroe started like an express train. ■Within two minutes they had

forced a liiie-out 15 metres out from which they mauled the ball among the pack, and marched expertly towards the line. Just as it Irxiked like running out of

steam No 8 Oily McEntyre span oft and showed a remarkable turn of ^eed for someone of such advanced years to sprint the remaining five metres to the line The conversion ^i led just wide,

but soon after Clitheroe were in ^ sim ilar attacking position. This time, however, it was Preston

who infringed giving a penalty chance for the visitors. Up stepped Bill Thatcher, who duly .obliged with the kick-off the post and over. ; . Preston began to use their tricky

back line and seemed to have the edge atscrumtime It was no real surprise when after

some serious pressure, Clitheroe con ceded a Mckable penalty leaving the half-time score 8-3 in Clitheroe’s favour.

In the second period both sides

struggled to g ^ control as the game see-sawed from end-to-end. Preston threw everything at

' Clitheroe and only some last-ditch defence kept them out. Full-back Paul Woodworth along

with centres Russ Shiels and Martin O'Connor were prominent in keeping the line intact. Then as time ran down, Clitheroe

turned over a Preston ball at the base of the scrum, and some quick think ing and good hands down the blind side saw flanker Allan Nuttall cap a fine all-round display to go over in the comer. An excellent touch line conversion

from Shiels tied it up nicely for a sat isfying victory.

There are tivo games at Littlemoor

on Saturday as the first team enter tain Windermere while the Cavaliers host Lostock (kick-off 3 p.m.). Chorley Under 10s.......... .............. . .5 ClUheroe Buccaneers Under 10s ..75 IN their first competitive game of the

■ season, the Buccaneers recorded a resounding victory over an inexperi enced Chorley team. Clitheroe started a t break-neck

speed with Will Murray and Sam Hill making regular breaks into the Chorley defence. Ably supported by Jordan Park-

ington, Murray was very difficult to . stpp and scored three quick tries. On the rare occasions Choriey were

able to secure the ball, determined tackling from Tom Taberner and Joseph Kenny prevented then from making any meaningful headway. In the forwards the front row of

Parkington, Kieron Meadows and Alistair Sansom were very solid, and illusive running from Oliver Murray gave him his first score of the game and increased the Clitheroe lead, before Chorley grabbed a consolation score just before half-tima In the second half Clitheroe kept

upthepressura Kane Jones, playing his first game,

performed well in all areas and the Buccaneers defence was determined not to be breached. With Chorley be©nning to tire, the

much fitter Clitheroe team ran in fur ther tries, with scores from Tom Tabemer, Sam Hill (3), Parkington

. and the two Murray brothers pving Clitheroe an emphatic margin of vic tory. This excellent all-round perform

ance bpdes well for the season fore a young and improving squad. But Clitheroe face much stronger,

opposition against Burnley on Sun day. All teams meet at the clubhouse at 10-15 a.m. for this home fbeture.

n g Whallcy Juniors Under 16 will be sponsored for

the next two seasons by Houldsworths Solicitors of Whalley. Team manager and club chairman Dave Asticy said: "We arc delighted to welcome such a long-estab lished village business as a team sponsor, and hope to enjoy a long and lasting rela tionship with Houldsworths." Amanda Meadows for Houldsworths added: "We arc honoured to be sponsoring Whallcy Juniors this year, and I am hoping my son Matthew (pictured with the team, s) will start training with the club next year."

Chorley........................................ 0, CLITHEROE were expecting a tough encounter against a strong opposition that has seen Choriey and Leyland Foxes merga The game got underway and from

the very first whistle Clitheroe worked hard to dominate the game, strong runs from Teece and Ashley

' up front kept Chorley Leyland under pressure, a number of fine saves from

the viators keeper kept the score 0-0. Clitheroe used both sides of the

pitch to great effect and as the game continued Clitheroe were the stronger team. Jus t before half-time Clitheroe

were put under some pressure from the Chorley Leyland forwards and forced Pye into making an excellent save from a snap^ot. A goalmouth clearance from Allen

stopped Chorley taking a surprise lead and the game remmed goalless at the interval. Clitheroe came out fighting from

the whistle and should have been a goal up inside a couple of minutes when skipper Ashley found herself one on one with the keeper. Clitheroe continued to stay strong

and look for the winning goal and after some excellent skill from 'Walk er-Smith she beat the defender shaped to shoot and slipped the ball across the face of the goal to Guthrie who made no mistake finding the back. Clitheroe worked hard to get a sec-

.ond and should have but the final whistle went and Clitheroe left the pitch happy with all three points.
