T first glance, there’s not a whole lot tha t’s rock and roll about the Hyu ndai Arnica b u t in one
respect, i t’s the Elvis Presley of city cars. Ju s t as ‘The King’ was resurrected
from the dead to hit the road once again (albeit with the judicious use of period footage, huge diamond screens, digital remastering and most of his old band), so the Arnica was returned from what most thought its funeral plot to play a few last gigs. As a used car i t offers a cheap and dependable but rather dated proposition th a t offers virtually the peace of mind of a new car.
What You Pay Prices for the Arnica s ta r t a t around

£4,500 for an 06 plated 1.1-litre GSi model. Opt for th e r i tz ie r CDX and y o u ’ll need around £5,000. The only other permutation is the CDX with auto gearbox which tacks a hefty £800 onto th a t price. Insurance groupings s ta r t a t 3 for th e GSI and top out a t a hardly nosebleed 4 for the CDX.

with any small city car, check for parking bumps and scrapes, especially as the Arnica may well have been bought as a first car after passing the driving test. Also check the fitments a t the rear for signs of damage by little hands. Most manufacturers could save a lot of money by taking a couple of four-year olds for a test drive in the back of their cars to see what gets ripped out. Otherwise, ensure that the Arnica’s tyres and bumpers tyres are in good shape, that the chrome work hasn’t gone a bit flaky and th a t there’s a full service history on display. Try to get one with the ABS option fitted.
On The Road The Arnica is powered by a 1.1-litre
four cylinder petrol engine with 12- valves. Maximum power is produced at 5,500rpm bu t i t ’s only 62bhp so heart stopping performance is never going to be on the menu. If you must know, the 0- 60mph sprint will detain you for a full 15.2 seconds and if you go for the 4-speed automatic gearbox option, th a t time extends to a laborious 18.9 seconds. Top speeds are 91mph for the manual and 86mph for the automatic but all of this is rather missing the point. The Arnica is designed for use in busy towns and cities where the chance to exceed 30mph rarely presents itself.
Overall There are many better cars around for
much the same money. If you are looking for hassle-free, reliable motoring, the Arnica has a place, but its high emissions and so-so fuel economy act as demerits to its practicality and ease of use benefits.

Zippy enough to entertain in a straight line, it’ll make 60mph in 10.1 seconds and run on to a top speed of 136mph, helped in no small part by the 407’s very slippery shape. Fuel economy is surprisingly good for a peppy petrol power plant in what is a deceptively large car, the 407 2.2 returning a creditable 31mpg on the combined cycle. Emissions aren’t this 407’s strongest suit, although the 214g/km figure won’t preclude it from busi ness buyers who are genuinely sold on the look and feel. The 407 marks a very definite sea change

Perhaps Peugeot has merely been astute
in seeing where this section of the market is heading. For a few years now, what’s been termed the ‘medium-range mainstream sec tor’ has been steadily diminishing, sales eroded by smarter and more practical mini- MPV style vehicles from below, smaller prestige models from above and shrinking fleet volumes. Cars like the 406, the Ford Mondeo, the Vauxhall Vectra and the Renault Laguna which were once some of the UK’s strongest selling cars have seen sales dwindle. It must be frustrating for the manufacturers who, having poured enor mous budgets into creating what are some of the most impressive vehicles on the road today, saw profits vaporising before their very eyes. It didn’t help that the current crop of Japanese rivals such as the Honda Accord, the Mazda6 and the Toyota Aven- sis are looking stronger than ever. With this in mind, Peugeot realised that in order for the 407 to make respectable sales, it could n’t be just another bland repmobile. As a result the styling is bold, the interior quali ty is unarguably better than an entry-level Mercedes and the driving characteristics have matured to suit a customer who nei ther wants to corner on the door handles nor feels the necessity to have a prestige badge as an ego prop. The half leather seating felt better and seemed of higher quality than many of the bargain basement full leather trims fitted to upper-spec mid range saloons and the seats had enough lateral grip and were comfortable. The steering wheel is trimmed in leather but featured neat cut-outs for the thumbs. The dash board follows the trend for ‘waterfall’ cen tre consoles on which most of the major instruments are placed and sees a welcome move away from the rattly hard plastic ven tilation and air conditioning controls that have blighted many Peugeots of yore. Expensively slush moulded plastics yield to the touch along the top of the dashboard while there are classy looking applique strips along the dash and doors. The Peu geot staple of chrome-ringed dials and a chrome and leather trimmed gear knob are also evident. The simple view that this car will stand

Challenging, surprising, and beautifully built will be more than enough to give Peugeot a sizeable slice of the cake.
