DONATIONS were made to three char ities when Clitheroe Ladies’ Social Sec tion of the NFU held their AGM at The Calf’s Head Hotel, Worston. President Susan Cropper welcomed all

the members and three guests, who were there to receive the donations. Anne Sweeney travelled from the Rose

Marie Cancer Unit based at Preston Royal Infirmary. It covers patients from Lancashire and South Cumbria. Half a million pounds is raised each year in donations and is spent on research and equipment for patients, including wigs and music. Money is also used for research and training at Lancaster Uni versity, where they are looking into prostate and breast cancer. Violet Leach attended on behalf of the

North West Air Ambulance. She became a supporter due to unfortunately having to use the ambulance following a car crash. The cost of keeping the helicopter fly

ing is £1.9m. a year and there is no mainstream funding. The helicopter is kept available 360 days a year and the estimated time from the base in Black pool to the Ribble Valley is just eight minutes. The helicopter has recently had a technology update and a side door fit ted, enabling passengers to get in and out more easily. There is also now room for one passenger to travel with the crew. Also at the AGM was Georgina

Lamb, representing the Royal Agricul tural Benevolent Association (RABI). She explained that the charity supports farmers, their families, dependents and any associates. Of its funds, some £1.3m. is given in Lancashire alone to long-term beneficiary’s, going towards

utility and food bills. Money is also given to people who have accidents or disabilities. The foot and mouth out break made it far more difficult for farm ers to sell stock and resulted in a further £22,500 being distributed. Also at the AGM; secretary Pat

Shorrock gave a brief resume of the meetings during the year and thanked members for their help during her five years as secretary. Margaret Baines gave the treasurers report and president Susan Cropper gave a brief report of her year in office, saying how much she had enjoyed the opportunity to meet lots of new people and travel to different social events. She thanked the committee and the branch for the support she received during her two-year term in office. Susan was thanked for her time in

office and presented with her past presi dents badge and a flower arrangement Officials elected were: President Sus

Whitmore; secretary Hillary Wood; treasurer Margaret Baines; assistant treasurer Jessie Wrathall; speakers sec retary Angela Whitwell; social secretary Elizabeth Thornber; flower secretary Susan Cropper; tea hostess Marie Collinge; press secretary Susan Whitwell. The committee are M. Hold en, E. Marsden, P. Shorrock and S. Thornber. The recent day trip to Chester was a

very enjoyable and successful event. The County President’s Church Service was on December 2nd a t Dean Parish Church and the Clitheroe branch Christ mas Party ws the following dav at The Calf’s Head Hotel, Worston. The meet ing in January is David Howard talking on Bluebird.

Police warning over bogus collectors

BOGUS charity collec tors are targeting Clitheroe residents, police have warned. Officers are warning

elderly and vulnerable residents, especially those living alone, to be extra vigilant and not to assume that all charity collectors or leaflets are genuine. The warning follows an

incident where two fraud sters posing as charity collectors for the North West Air Ambulance, attempted to trick money out of residents in a Clitheroe area. The men are white,

aged between 45 and 50, of large build and were wearing yellow jackets and air ambulance badges on the front of their jackets. Luckily, no money was

handed over on this occa sion, but PC Peter Warn ing, of Clitheroe Police, is urging people to check for identity and not to hand any money or bank details over to strangers at the door. If you have been a vic

tim of a similar crime, please call PC Wareing for crime prevention advice on 01200 443344.
