A LIVELY and enthusiastic audience supported the second concert organised by the new Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Club. Held at the St Mary’s Cen
tre, Clitheroe, it featured The Julie Edwards and Kevin Dearden Quintet, pictured, who proved to be a group with both vocal and instrumental strengths. Vocalist Julie Edwards was
excellent and perhaps at her very best on the slower num bers, while Kevin Dearden played some first rate alto sax. But possibly the star of the show was Edward Barnwell, with his barnstorming piano solos. After a month’s break during
August, the club will resume its concerts with guitarist Gary Boyle and his band on Friday, September 28th. Other future gigs include Stuart Riley and Octet on Friday, October 26th, and the King’s Cross Hot Club on Friday, November 23rd. All the concerts are at the St Mary’s Centre, which now has a licensed bar. Look out for posters or watch these columns for further details, or visit the club’s website (www.rvjazzand-
bIues.co.uk) for more informa tion about this new and thriv ing club. Our picture shows Julie

Paul Cassidy, viola, used this work to play them selves in. Jacqueline Thomas and Martin Roscoe steadied the ship with brilliant trills from the pianist. Miss Jeal came in to
play first violin in Borodin’s second Quartet. There was much more assurance here. Borodin’s gift for melody was imme diately apparent in the opening, which passes from instrument to instrument. The coda is very still. The scherzo continues melodi- cally and leads into the Nocturne. This is familiar to most. In the Quartet, the tune passes between the first violin and the cello. saw Ian Belton take the lead violin part. From the beginning, it was clear that all the players were in accord with each other. Octaves played quietly on the piano got the work going. This theme relates to a legend concerning ghostly matters with monks and trees. The strings come whispering in. Positive forces surge on, but sink in apparent despair.
The work was written
just after the end of the First World War. There must have been a commu nal apprehension. Former ways seemed
irretrievable. Elgar fights away the blues as the quin tet proceeds and works through melodious sections to a conclusion which has an air of triumph about it. The players came through too, rejoicing in the quality of the music, giving it their very best in good spirit. The applause was warm and sustained.

stalls, games, raffle and refresh ments spread across the bustling field. A special Sunday attraction will
be decorated shire horses. The Ribble Valley Vintage Club
was formed in 1983 and members meet from September to May on the first Sunday of the month at Sawley Village Hall. The entrance fee for this year’s
event is £6 and most of the money raised will be used to support wor thy causes in the area. Children under 16 go free.
