A FARMER and ex-Olympian has spoken of the terrifying moment he thought he was

going to die. Mark Gornall, a former Olympic

Cyclist (pictured right in 1988) is recovering at his home in Laneside Farm, Pendleton, after a barn ceil ing collapsed on top of him. Emergency services battled for

two-and-a-half hours to free the 45-year-old, who became trapped beneath a grain hopper inside the milking parlour. Mr Gornall, who competed at

the Seoul Olympics in 1988, said he did not have time to panic when he realised the roof was collapsing - everything came down within a matter of three seconds. “I heard a noise coming from the

barn and went to investigate. I saw that cattle feed was leaking, the roof had already moved and was

I thought I was about to die...

by Faiza Afzaal

I am extremely lucky to be alive. Had the roof come down a further two inches, I wouldn’t be here to tell the tale.” Police, fire crews, rescuers from

the urban search and rescue team and members of the North West Air Ambulance attended the scene. Mr Gornall, who took over the

family business seven years ago, suffered shoulder injuries and swelling in his right leg due to loss of blood supply caused by nerve damage. He was airlifted to the Royal

on its way down,” he said. “It gave way and the other roof

beams couldn’t take the extra weight, so they came crashing down too. “Everything happened so quick

ly and I didn’t have time to react. “My initial reaction was ‘that’s

it - I’m not going to make it. I’m going to die’. I got squashed into a little space, just big enough for me.

Preston Hospital, where he remained for six days before being discharged last Wednesday. He hopes to return to work when he is fit and well, but says there are lots of repairs and maintenance work that need to be carried out inside the 25-year-old barn. Mr Gornall expressed his thanks

to all the emergency crews for their tremendous efforts in helping to rescue him.

Want to know about the Masons?

ARE you 21 or older and would like to know more about Freema sonry? On Saturday, there will be an

opportunity to find out more about the organisation at a special open event. Between 11 a.m. and 3-30 p.m., the joint lodge commit tee of the Clitheroe Masons is opening its doors to the public. People wanting to find out more

about Freemasonry are invited to call in at the Conservative Club, in Castle Street

Anyone who wants to discover

what is involved in being a mem ber, where and when lodges meet, as well as finding out who can join and how, will have their questions answered. There will also be a chance to

look round the lodge room and meet local members. Freemasonry has been part of

Clitheroe’s history for 185 years and now the organisation is trying to be more open about what it does.

: Next to the National Lottery,

the Masons are the largest dona tors of money both locally and nationally. The Freemasons are keen to

stress that it is not a secret society, although the organisation does hold its meetings in private and they are only open to members. However, the rules and aims are available to the general public. Meeting places are not a secret and in many cases are used by other community groups.

Ramblers walked in ‘Cromweirs footsteps’

SUNSHINE warmed 23 Clitheroe Ramblers who set out from the Roddlesworth car park - once the Hollinshead Mill owned by Eccles Shorrock in the 19th Century - on what was once a toll road that went over the moor to Darwen. One of the route’s interesting

historical features is Stepback Brook, so named when Cromwell's troops marched over the moors from Manchester to Preston. On reaching the brook, the command er ordered that they “step back” to fire cannon balls at Hollinshead Hall. The sun shone as the walkers

continued up the hill and the first heather was beginning to flower. Bilberries were also in evidence to the delight of some. The Holcombe Brook Tower,

erected in memory of Robert Peel, and the West Pennine moors came into view. The walkers then head ed north to Darwen Tower (1,220 feet), with a splendid panorama of Blackburn and Darwen, with tall chimney of India mill (also built by Eccles Shorrock) in the fore ground. The tower was officially built to

mark Queen Victoria's Jubilee, but unofficially to celebrate the freeing of the moor for public

access. Some friends climbed 86 feet to the top to enjoy a good blow by the blustery wind. The group then headed down

into the 86-acre- Sunnyhurst Woods, planted originally in 1800 for game birds. The woods are most aptly named as the sun shone through the leafy trees. The walk then continued by

Darwen Golf Course to Earnsdale Reservoir, built about 1850 to pro vide Darwen with water, and back through the fields to Ryal Farm to the car park and the end of another enjoyable day. Our picture shows the ramblers at Darwen Tower, (s)
