bigger and do not mind something a little dif ferent, Citroen now offers a tempting entry- level 2.2 Hdi version of its rather unique C6. Most customers in this sector, however, will

probably ignore it and go for something more established - perhaps the new 2.8-litre Audi A6 for example. Despite the sales curve plateauing some

what, 4x4s are still doing very good business in the UK. Citroen and Peugeot are now launching a twin assault with their C-Crosser and 4007 models.

Likewise, Audi is set to launch a smaller

Q5 model, but again this will be a way off, probably arriving here just after Volkswa gen’s new Tiguan debuts early next year. In the shorter term, the car the Peugeot

and Citroen are based upon, the Mitsubishi Outlander, looks interesting. Jeep’s Wrangler has sprouted a few more

creature comforts in its new shape for those looking for something properly go-anywhere. The same maker also offers a few more crea ture comforts in its new Patriot and Compass models.

HREE in four motorists would be likely to fail if they retook the driving

test, it has been revealed. And 79% of drivers think

motoring standards are declining, according to a sur vey by the What Car? maga zine. The magazine got 20 peo

ple, whh a total of 416 years' experience on the roads, to retake a driving test. As many as 75% of them

failed, with one candidate heading the wrong wa y down a one-way street and many driving too fast. Others signalled incorrectly, late or not at all. The What Car? survey also

revealed that, although near ly four in five drivers reckon standards are getting worse, only 31% admit their own behind-the-wheel perform ance is below par. What Car? editor Steve Fowler said: "It's no surprise

that driver error is partly responsible for 95% of car accidents in the UK. We see examples of bad driving every day on our roads, but most people think they are perfectly safe behind the wheel. "Every year more than

3 ,2 0 0 people die on our roads and 28,000 are seri ously injured. So it's about time we all took responsibili ty for our own standard of

driving."” BSM driving school road

safety consultant Robin Cum mins said: "Too much emphasis is placed on the outcome of the driving test, which means learners only want to be taught how to pass the test, not how to drive well. We believe the test should be at least one hour long, which would allow it to include the types of roads on which drivers most commonly travel."
