■ CHATBURN earned a four-wicket victory over fellow Second Division outfit Long Lee in the Craven and District Cricket League. ■ Five wickets from

(tt.

Andrew Booth (5-38) and three for Rod Booth (3-32) halted any progress the home side had hoped to make past the 135 they posted. Rus sell Braithwaite chipped in with a wicket too. : : The Chatburn reply,

saw runs from David Price (34), David.Lakin (37) and Neil Cartledge (30 not out) complete the victory, as the visitors reached 139-6 in 32.2 overs. Chatburn seconds

remain third in the Fifth Division after beating Sutton seconds by 19 runs on Saturday. The villagers scored

198, Ashley Bennett top scoring with 45 not out. There were useful con

tributions from Dave Musson (34), Aamir Zulfi (32), Paul Wood- worth (22) and Ben Frankland (21).

WHALLEY'S game against Oswaldtwistle Immanuel on Satur day set a losing precedent that fol lowed the team throughout the weekend. An agonising defeat by seven

runs in this home league clash was followed by a Ramsbottom Cup semi-final exit 24 hours later to league leaders Baxenden, who remain on course for the double. Neil Cordingley (4-30) and

David O'Neill (4-44) took four wickets apiece on Saturday, as Oswaldtwistle were held to 153 all out. Whalley paid man Bradman Ediriweera and Declan Fitzhenry each took a wicket to complete the haul.

However, the locals went pretty

close in the reply as a similar team effort was seen with the bat, thanks to notable efforts from Cordingley (36), Alex Whelan (34) and Ediri weera (23) as the locals were closed out for 146. Gerard Metcalf did the most

damage with 3-36, with a further two wickets taken by both Saeed and Imran Abid. The following day's encounter

with Baxenden followed a similar tale, with Whalley chasing and needing to spread the runs through out the team. Visitors Baxenden posted 200-8,

thanks largely to professional Jonathan Fielding's half century

■ AS the Clitheroe and District Midweek Crick et League draws to a close, with only two league fixtures remain ing, the competition is now a two-horse race. , . Chipping A remain

unbeaten with a compre hensive victory over Calderstones.

. Batting first, Chipping reached 124-4 with Bid- well and T. Proctor both retiring on 31. In reply the hospital side reached 83 all out with K. Gill retiring on 31. Level on points with

Chipping and also unbeaten are Waggon and Horses who made short work of Rimington. Batting first, Riming

ton made 119-5 with S. Whalley and Meade retiring on 30 with P. Cox returning figures of 1-10 from his three overs, and A. Pearce 1-9 from his three overs. Waggon openers Peter

' kr

Dibb and G. Salmon made light work of Rim- ington's bowling, both retiring on 30 before Waggon closed out the game at 121-2 from 10.1 overs. In the other games Low

Moor continued their recent good form with vic tory over St James. Batting first, Low

Moor made 133-5, and in reply, St James made 65- 6 thanks to the tight bowling of Chris Mulh- em who took 3-1. In the remaining

game, Sabden overcame bottom side Chipping Ramblers.

CLITHEROE Cricket Club proved second best to the batting of the prolific Ali Azmat at Earby on Saturday. The league's leading run-maker

last season smashed a century that featured 11 fours and four sixes that, coupled with the efforts of David Watson (26), Nigel Hodge (31) and Chris Walton (43 not out), saw the home side to victory by just 11 runs. Clitheroe attained an early wick

et with that of opener Stephen Pickles, caught by Neil Bolton off Andrew Pearce for four, a t 18, before Earby fired up. Hodge, Watson and Azmat all

eventually fell, the pro going to a Chris Musson catch off the bowling of Josh Marquet. But at 215-4, the target had all

but been set before Walton and Matthew Haines (0 not out) com pleted the innings at 221-4. Neil Bibby was chief wicket

taker with 2-52. In reply, the Chatburn Road

locals got off to a good start, attacking their target to put on 70 runs for the first wicket. The impetus came from profes

sional Michael Papps and Bolton, before the latter was bowled for 24 by Walton. Replacement Musson managed a single before he exited to a Peter

(53), and knocks from Callum Waddington (33), David Parkinson (34) and Gary Sudworth (41). Waddington and Parkinson set

the pace with 71 runs for the first wicket, before leading wicket taker Mark Fallon (3-44) dispensed with the former, thanks to the hands of O'Neill. Two wickets were taken by Cord

ingley (2-24), Lee Burgess (2-27) and Ediriweera (1-47) as well. The reply saw some decent

knocks, after what proved a poor start for captain Martin Davies (1) and his professional Ediriweera

(16). The skipper was first to fall for

just six on the board, and the Sri

Lankan paid man followed at 30. However, Lee Kearsley (34),

Cordingley (19) and later Whelan (38 not out) and Fitzhenry (22), added respectability to the score, and what could have seen a late flourish to victory. Unfortunately, the last three

batsmen fell for just over 20 more runs to see the side all out, 40 runs short of their target, at 161. Baxenden's wicket takers were Sudworth (2-30), Parkinson (2-23)

and Fielding (2-31). Whalley now turn their attention

back to the league on Saturday with a trip to basement side Bamoldswick, wickets pitched at 1- 30 p.m.

Turner, and the pair made it over' the century mark before the paid man was Walton's third wicket of the afternoon, as he went on to col lect 4-70. Turner (13) stayed aboard for a

further four runs, to allow captain Simon Coulter to come to the crease to join Andrew Pearce for the best partnership of the afternoon. The pair put on 91 runs for the

sixth wicket, striking the 200 mark to set up a possible victory march - thanks to 42 runs form Pearce and 38 by Coulter. But with 22 runs to go, the skip

per fell first, caught by Matthew Haines off Earby captain Stephen Hipgrave, soon to be followed by Pearce to the same bowler without further score. This signalled the beginning of

the end for the side, as with four wickets left, the remaining order could only limp to under half of the 22 runs needed for victory as Hip- grave and Walton cleaned up. Clitheroe finished all out for 210

as Hipgrave returned the best bowl ing figures of the day with 4-37. This Saturday Clitheroe enter

tain derby opponents Ribblesdale Wanderers at Chatburn Road, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.

AN impressive century from Joe Scuderi wasn't enough to overcome a strong Padiham side at Church . •

■ Three wickets and 60 runs from;

Padiham paid man Kashif Siddique shone out from the visitors' five- wicket win over the locals - over shadowing the undefeated 109 made by the home professional. Siddique took 3-60 as Wanderers

posted 167-6, thanks to the efforts of Scuderi. However, the Ribblesdale player

couldn't do it all on his own, and due to Naveed Ashraf (2-44) and Nesir Mehmood (1-35), wickets fell around him for very little. Fellow opener Alistair Marsh

added support with 23 runs before he was trapped leg before, having attained four boundaries and put on 59 runs for the first wicket. And only David Howard (11)

could join them in double figures after that, as Ashraf and Siddique took hold, the latter having Ryan Gladwin (5) and Joe Bunyan (0) caught behind by Gavin Kelly, and Stephen Kerr trapped leg before. Scuderi's knock of 109 featured

11 boundaries and came off 128 balls. In reply, Siddique opened along

side Philip Metcalfe (17), and the pair quickly got to work, to put on 71 runs for the first wicket. Metcalfe was trapped leg before

by Howard for the first of the Rib blesdale man's 3-89, before his replacement Kevin Hitchon fol-

Read find no answer to pro

Naeem READ had no answer to Babar Naeem on Saturday as the Edenfield professional heaped a 96-run defeat upon the Whalley Road side. Will Driver's men could

n't set a field for the big-hit ting paid man as he launched the ball to all parts of the ground for his 147, seeing the side to a grand score of 264-7. Partnerships with Greg

Smithson (32) and Adam Barnes (37) proved the most fruitful, but the Eden field player was eventually stopped in his tracks by opposing professional Hanif-ur-Rehman, to a catch by Terry Little. The bulk of the runs had

been scored by this point, with Jamie Smith (23) the only only batsman in dou ble figures as the rest of the order played support roles. Rehman took 3-74 from

his 20-over stint, and three wickets also fell for Chris Holt (3-66) as Read missed Andrew Rushton. The reply was not out of

Read's reach, but after see ing Driver run out for 42 and Rehman go for a duck to a catch behind that few saw touch his bat, the rub of the green was not with them. Holt was the team's top

lowed him for 13 at the hands of Scuderi off a John Braithwaite delivery. And despite his 60 runs, four

boundaries and four sixes, Siddique didn't stay the course either as he was next to fall to Howard, caught behind by Gladwin. However, Anthony Hall picked

up where the pro left off, and a com bination of his 22 not out and fur ther runs from partners Naveed Ashraf (12), Mehmood (23) and Peter Usher (13 not out) saw Padi ham reach their 170 target with five wickets to spare. Ribblesdale Wanderers face a

scorer with 31 runs, caught and bowled by William Slinger before he could add any more. And the next best didn't

appear until the late order, from Dave Swarbrick (21) and Scott Doughty (28), by which point runs proved merely consolation. Edenfield got all their

men with a ball to spare to take maximum points and leave Read blitzed. Naeem was chief wicket

taker with 5-73, including Terry Little (2), Rehman (0), Matt Doughty (0), Swarbrick and Scott Doughty, while William Slinger claimed 3-33. This Saturday Read trav

el to league leaders Baxen den, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m.

Amazing win after middle-order collapse

CLITHEROE Cobras Under 15s had an amazing win at title contenders Cherry Tree. Bowling first the Cobras struggled early on with the Cherry Tree openers taking control, until Stinson claimed the first wicket. The Cobras then got

back into the game and there were wickets for Kilkenny and Dewhurst. Cherry Tree finished on 96- 3 off 18 overs. In reply Geelan was run

out early on for four. Dewhurst hit a quick fire 30 and had to retire, McKenna

hit 13 and Robinson pro duced seven until a mid order collapse. Gallagher and Stinson

kept the score ticking until the former fell for nine. Stin son finished on 29 not out and saw the local side home with three balls to spare. The Under 13s A had a

convincing victory against local rivals Ribblesdale Wanderers B at Chatburn Road on Monday night.

Batting first, Clitheroe

made steady but unspectac ular progress on a difficult batting surface. However a fine innings

by LeBreton (27) put Clitheroe in a strong posi tion. And other significant

contributions by Ahmed (10) and Houldsworth (16) left Clitheroe with a net total of 88 off their 16 overs. In reply Ribblesdale were

never in a position to threaten the target due to some excellent all round bowling and fielding from

Clitheroe. In particular the pace of Houldsworth (3-5) left Ribblesdale struggling. Further Wickets from

Ahmed (2-7) and Ramsden (2-13) enabled the Cobras to run out comfortable win ners. Meanwhile, the Ribble

Valley Under 15s cruised into the final of the Lan cashire Cup at home to Blackpool. Winning the toss they

elected to bat and got off to a comfortable start until Hopkins fell for 11 and Dewhurst made a brief appearance scoring two.

Marsh joined opener

Laycock and they took the score on to 84 before Lay- cock was dismissed for an excellent 51. Marsh made 20 before he

popped one back to the bowler. Clarkson came in and made a brisk 23 before he went for one shot too many and was caught at slip. There was then a collapse

as Knight, McKenna and Hutchins fell for two runs between them. At 119-8 things looked bleak until a brilliant partnership of 62 between Lowes 38 and Robinson 27, took the score

up to a competitive 189.

^ In reply Blackpool were never in the game. Hutchins removed their

star man in his'second over. Lowes bowled five overs, conceding one run, followed by Dewhurst who took 2-3 in five overs. There was a wicket too

for Coulston, and Baines had the impressive figures of 3-11 off five overs. Marsh claimed 2-4 and at the end the Valley ran out winners by 94 runs. The team now wait to see

if they meet Hyndburn or Burnley in the final.

wide open CLITHEROE Tennis Club A kept the pressure on league leaders Burnley A in the race for the East Lan cashire Open League Sec ond Division title. On Saturday they record

ed yet another maximum- points victory at Blackburn Northern. Top pairing Steven Pym

and Daniel Bush shared the first two sets on tie-breaks with the Blackburn top pair, before winning the third G-2. On the other court, Tony

Bush and Phil Mileham lost their first set, but came through 1-6,6-0,6-1. In the reverse matches,

both Clitheroe pairs won easily - Tony Bush and Phil Mileham winning 6-2, 6-2, with Daniel Bush and Steve Pym winning with a similar score. Clitheroe A took on local

rivals Whalley A in the sec ond to last match of their season, needing a good result to keep ahead in the Mixed League title race. Daniel Bush and Jennifer

Ilolgate raced to a 4-1 lead in the first set against Susan Liver and Andrew Moore, but lost 6-4 .only to take the second set 7-5. Liver and Moore then

beat Steve I’ym and Louise Burrill, losing only three games. Pym and Burrill drew

with Tom and Jill Ormerod, winning the first set on a tie-break, only to lose 6-1 in the second. Bush and Ilolgate needed

to win by two straight sets to force a draw, and they prevailed 6-4, 6-1 to leave Clitheroe one game short of overall victory, and an extra point. At four sets and 37 games

all, the result was a tie. This means in the final

game of the season against Blackburn Northern, Clitheroe will need to win convincingly to secure the title. Meanwhile, the Whalley

Mixed team continued their recent good form in a con vincing 7-2 victory over Blackburn Northern at Sta tion Road. Liver and Richard Lam

bert defeated Blackburn's premier pairing 6-2, 6-3, and beat the second pair for the loss of just two games. Jill Ormerod and Jerry

Brees won the first set 7-5 against their second string opponents, but one break of serve in the second set evened the match up at a set all. Against the first pairing,

the first set slipped by 4-6, but in the second the Whal ley pairing won 6-0 to leave them the victors on the night. • Clitheroe Club Finals Day will be held on Sunday, September 9th from noon - all junior and senior singles and doubles finals will be played during the afternoon, with presentations following the end of the matches at about 6 p.m. There will also be a barbecue.
