Byrom is tempted by fantastic offer
By Adrian Capstick
ON the eve of the new Uni- Bond First Division North season, Clitheroe playmak- er Joel Byrom is the target of Blue Square North out fit Southport. The former Blackburn
Rovers youngster has received an enticing offer from the Sandgrounders. Southport boss Peter
:
Davenport watched the 20- year-old net a stunning individual strike in the Blue’s 3-3 draw against Fleetwood Town last week, and was quick to invite the forward to kick-off the sea son with the coastal side on Saturday. Byrom played a full 90
minutes and netted on his debut in a 3-0 win over Gainsborough Trinity, before scoring again in a 3- 2 win at Workington on Tuesday night. It looks highly unlikely
j'CF-
that he would turn down a full-time position with a Conference North side, having been made a “great” offer by former England striker Daven port, butjoint Clitheroe
he decides there’s some thing worth staying for at Clitheroe, then he will defi nitely be playing Satur day.” He added: “Joel’s got
something a bit special about him. Any club would want a Byrom in their side as he makes things happen. He’s an honest lad, but a move back into profession al football is what he ulti mately wants.” Reynolds is geared up for
the new campaign getting underway in Stockport. The Blues boss admits
Joel Byrom
boss Neil Reynolds had yet to hear otherwise yester day. He said: “I’m hoping
Joel will be at Woodley on Saturday. We agreed to him playing for Southport this week. He’s been offered a great deal by them, but he also has a mind at Clitheroe. We have offered him something and he has n’t said no to us yet. “We would never stand
in the way of a player play ing at a higher level, but if
the fixture list could have been kinder to them, but hopes they will adapt and overcome with or without Byrom. Woodley Sports away
isn’t the ideal game to kick-off the season for Reynolds, but just one of the varying challenges they face this season. “We could have had a
better start than at Wood- ley, what with their plastic pitch, but we’re going to have to play on it at some time so we might as well get it out of the way,” said Reynolds. “They’ve a new set up, a
fresh manager, Chris Wilcox has brought in a few new players such as local lad Ryan Moore from Ramsbottom, so we’d expect them to be a good, quick side.” The same can be said for
Tuesday night’s first home game of the new campaign, when the Blues welcome Bamber Bridge to Shaw- bridge for what should be an entertaining derby encounter. Brig have strengthened
their squad in pre-season and look a force to be reck oned with this term. They thrashed Coca-
Cola Championship side Preston North End 6-2 last month, and won their last friendly 3-2 against War rington Town on Saturday. Reynolds believes they
will be up there at the top of the table with the likes of Bradford Park Avenue and FC United come the end of the season. But looking at the pre
season the Blues have had, teams could quite easily be saying the same about Clitheroe! He said: “Brig boss Phil Entwistle’s made some

good signings in the sum mer and they will be a very difficult, strong side who’ll be up there come the end of the season. “But teams will say the
same about us, that Clitheroe have signed some good players and will be stronger this time out. “I t ’s about what we’ve
done that counts, we’ve had the friendlies now, it’s time to earn our money so to speak, as these games are our bread and butter.” Team selection for Sat
urday seems all but sorted for the Blues boss, but one position is proving some thing of a quandary. “I’m pretty certain what
team I ’ll start with on Sat urday, but certain posi tions, like who’ll keep goal, will go right to the wire,” said Reynolds. “There’s hardly any
thing between Peter Collinge and James Mann, and either of them could start Saturday as they’ve both done well. “It all hangs on how well
they do in training this week, it’s that tight!” However, the Blues boss is undecided about who
will be club captain this season, and says it could be one of half a dozen players. He said: “We want a cap
tain who will play week in, week out, and at the moment I can say that of five or six players. “Whoever gets the arm
band has to be a pivotal fig ure on the pitch. “The one thing that is
concrete, though, is that Gregg Anderson will con tinue as vice captain.” And Reynolds has taken
great pleasure in Gary Jackson’s four goals in seven pre-season appear ances after he scored both goals in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Prescot Cables. He said: “Each session
he gets better and better. “I don’t think he’s quite
ready for 90 minutes of UniBond football, but he’s nearly there. “We’re looking for goals
from Jacko, and with the goals to games ratio he’s shown, we should get them.” Tuesday’s home game
against Bamber Bridge kicks-off at 7-45 p.m.
Joe is Cumbrians’ record signing By Chris Boden
WHALLEY-based striker Joe Garner became Carlisle United’s record signing this week. Garner completed a
u?r
£140,000 move to Brunton Park from Blackburn Rovers, in a deal which will rise to £150,000 if the Cum brians are promoted to the Championship. The 19-year-old was
signed on an emergency loan in time to play in the 1- 1 draw at Walsall on Satur day, as a second half substi tute, before completing a permanent move, on a three-year contract. However, in a whirlwind

few days for Garner, the man who signed him, Neil McDonald, who hailed the
youngster as “one of the brightest prospects in the country”, then became the first managerial casualty of the season on Monday. A Carlisle club statement
said, simply: “The board of Carlisle United Football Club regret to say that they have lost confidence in Neil McDonald and are termi nating his contract forth with. They thank him for his hard work at the club and wish him all the best for his future career.” The
club then
announced: “Carlisle Unit ed Football Club can con firm that the departure of Neil McDonald will have no effect on the £140,000 transfer of 19-year-old for ward Joe Garner.” England Schoolboy and Under 19 international
Garner, who did not make a first team appearance at Blackburn, scored eight goals in 10 reserve games at Ewood Park, and hit five goals in 18 appearances for the Cumbrians on loan last season, including a stunning late strike at Port Vale. Carlisle are believed to
have beaten off the advances of Nottingham Forest and Scottish Premier League side Dundee United for his services, and McDonald said on Friday: “Joe is a great signing for us and it is a fantastic coup for the club. “We’ve managed to get
him ahead of a number of clubs because of the way we treated him last season, and the relationship he devel oped with the other players. “He brings goals and a
great work ethic to the team. He is a very good team player who can put himself about and doesn’t give defenders time to catch their breath before he’s at them again. “Coming to Carlisle will
be a great launch pad for him because of the football we play and the support we have. “He has bags of potential
and he will give the team a massive boost. We’re delighted we’ve got him and we feel as if we have signed one of the brightest prospects in the country.” Garner is only the fourth
Carlisle player to cost six figures, and his fee beats the £121,000 paid to Notts County for former Burnley loan star David Reeves in December 1993.

over the last 100m, the Ger mans powered through and the GB pair faded, as they crossed the line in a person al best time of 1 minute 31.3 seconds. Schofield and Brown fin

just fractions of a second behind the winners, to qual ify for the final. ■ LANGHO Under 13s are on the lookout for new play ers who must have been born after September 1st. 1994. Langho Under 13s play
