modicum of style and pay the price in terms of interior space or else opt for a motorised breeze block with acres of room but a singular absence of elegance. There are rare exceptions, however, and
the Citroen Xsara Picasso has long been one of the less “setsquare” mini-MPVs. Sales have been strong as a result of the
car’s distinctive looks and realistic pricing, and the powerful HDillO diesel engine remains a popular choice among buyers. I t is a great car for those averse to fuel
station forecourts. That is people like me. Capable of running 760 miles between fills, you will not have to take a break in that

last-minute dash to work to stand around on a windy forecourt inhaling a cocktail of petrochemicals quite so often. You will be denied such frequent queuing
behind the guy who after paying for his fuel decides he would also like a bottle of Fanta charged to his Visa card or the student who insists on paying for three litres of unleaded with a cheque. Able to return a healthy 57.6 m.p.g., the
HDillO version of the Xsara Picasso may not earn you a thick wad of Tiger Tokens, but it will keep fuel bills down and, with just 131g/km of CO2 emitted per kilometre, salve your environmental conscience at the same time. You certainly will not feel guilty when you
give the throttle pedal a prod, as this engine rewards you for doing. Unlike many diesel MPVs, this Xsara Picasso has a decent amount of overtaking ability up its sleeve. Instead of leaving you hanging out to
dry in the oncoming lane, the mid range thrust of the turbo-charged engine makes dispatching dawdlers safe and easy. Under hard acceleration an overboost facility cuts in, allowing 10% more torque than normal. That is on top of the car’s quoted 1771b/ft figure which in itself is pretty useful. With less weight to haul about than
many of its rivals, the Xsara Picasso HDi 110 can notch off the sprint to 60 m.p.h. in 10.7 seconds and run on to a top speed of 114 m.p.h. This makes i t a much quicker package than you would get if you opted for a Renault Scenic 1.9dCi or even a Ford C-Max 1.6TDCi.
Only one Desire model is now on offer. It
is priced at £17,035, but current offers will see you paying substantially less than that. Check your dealer for details and you should find that this car will cost you less than South Korean alternatives. Equip ment includes air conditioning, four airbags, central locking, a CD Player and electric mirrors, plus there are also two option packs. A £400 electric pack offers rear parking
sensors, folding door mirrors and electric rear windows, while a £350 automatic pack upgrade provides automatic digital air con ditioning, as well as automatic wipers and headlamps. If you have got your heart set on a Xsara
Picasso and can afford an HDillO, this is undoubtedly the engine to go for. Let us just say it is a very rounded product.

NISSAN has a high ly innovative small

FERRARI'S 430 Scuderia will join
