Public meeting over parish hall’s future

______ by Julie Magee______

THE future of St Paul’s parish hall in Low Moor will be dis cussed at a public meeting next month. Organised by the church, the

meeting, which will be chaired by an independent chairman and seek views on one of two options, will be held on Wednesday, August 9th, at 7-30 p.m. in the hall. The first option, which is

favoured by the church council, is that a local builder acquires the hall and its land. In return for this, he will convert

heard that police alerted to the crash eventually found James Mercer's badly damaged car out side his caravan home. Mercer (67), of Todber

A GISBURN man was more than double the drink-drive limit when he was breath tested two- and-a-half hours after crashing into the side of a bam. Blackburn magistrates

the church into a dual-purpose building, accommodating most of the activities, which presently take place in the hall. “The attraction of this scheme is

that the church is then used most days of the week, which is better for the building, rather than being just used for an hour or so on Sun days, half an hour on Wednesdays and for weddings and funerals,” explained the vicar. Canon Rodney Nicholson. Meanwhile, option two invites a

group representing the local com munity to buy the hall from the church and then carry out the nec essary improvements, such as fit ting new toilets and a new kitchen.

A HONEYMOON in Dublin followed the marriage of Miss Kate Johnston and Mr Graeme Yates. The couple, both of Hampshire, were

married a t Ferrari’s Country House Hotel, Thornley-with-Wheatley, and all the guests were asked to dress in black and white. The bride, a copywriter a t Sunsail

Yacht Charter and Watersports Vaca tions,.Portsmouth, is the daughter of Mr Tom and Mrs Chris Johnston, of Whalley Road, Langho. The bridegroom, a risk manager for

Caravan Park, Burnley Road, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and failing to stop after an accident. He was fined £255 with £45 costs and disqualified for three years. Mercer told the court he

had never had an accident before and when it hap pened he “couldn't believe it”.

Maze opens

mystical com maze prom ises to test the very best sense of direction when it is opened by Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. Peter Ainsworth at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The maze has been

grown a t Hawkshaw Farm, just off the A59 at Clayton-le-Dale. Other attractions at the farm include animals, a toy tractor area, sandpit and a food marquee.

Fun session

A FTJN session for babies, toddlers and children up to eight will be held at Gisburn Festival Hall from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday. I t will be run by the Ribble Valley Chil dren’s Centre.

TELLING the Mayor to “get lost” could be on the cards when he opens a new Ribble Valley tourist attraction this weekend. Mrs Dowson’s magical,

National Air Traffic Services, and a football fan, is the son of Mr Richard and Mrs Elizabeth Yates, of Stockton- on-Tees. Given away by her father, the bride

wore a full-length aqua blue, haltemeck gown and carried a bouquet of ger- bera’s and roses in white. Bridesmaids were Stacy Thompson,

the bride’s friend, and Laura Yates, the bridegroom’s niece. Both wore black and white dresses, and carried bou quets of white gerhera’s and roses. Best man was Sid Spence, of Teeside,

and usher was Matt Johnston, the bride’s brother. Following the wedding ceremony, a

reception was held at Ferrari’s. The couple will continue to live in Hamp shire.

Pub couple saying farewell

REGULARS at the Station Hotel, in King Street, Clitheroe, will today say a fond farewell to licensees Brenda and Derek Gooden as they retire after more than 20 years in the business. The couple are retiring from the

Thwaites-owned puh and plan to spend some time in Egypt. A presenta tion for the couple is planned for today, followed hy a leaving party on Satur day.

Mr Gooden said: “We have loved

working at the Station Hotel and the other Thwaites pubs we worked at and the brewery has really looked after us throughout our time here.” John Wright, Thwaites area manag

er, said: “Derek and Brenda have run the pub brilliantly and will be missed. They have been a great asset to Thwaites and I wish them all the best with their retirement.”

Have yoiir say on local rivers

WHAT could he done to improve local rivers? This is one of the questions that the

Ribble Catchment Conservation Trust hopes will be answered at a series of drop-in sessions, including one in Clitheroe next Tuesday. The Trust works tp protect and

enhance the rivers and streams of the Ribble Catchment - the area that feeds water into the River Ribble from its source in the Yorkshire Dales through to the Ribble Estuary and the West

Coast. Now the Trust has received a Heritage Lottery Grant to help pro mote awareness and actively involve local people in its work. As part of that, a series of seven drop-

in sessions has been organised, the first being a t St Mary’s Church Hall, Clitheroe, from 11 a.m. to 6-30 p.m. next Tuesday. Local people are encour aged to drop in and give their views. You can learn more about the Ribble

Catchment Conservation Trust at its website (www.ribbletrust.org.uk).

and providing access for disabled people. Canon Nicholson com mented: “Grants may well be available towards these costs, but it would require a well-motivated individual, possibly employed by the project, to access public funds and be committed to the hall’s improvement programme.” He added th a t the parish hall

has served the community well for the last 35 years, but that substan tial sums of money now need to be spent, which the church simply does not have. Canon Nicholson is glad to

answer questions ahead of the meeting and can be contacted on 01200 458019.
