As July gives way to August, there are countless jobs that can be done in the home and in the garden. Make the most of the expertise and customer service that is on offer at your local shops, garden centres or DIY stores.

A thin mulch of grass mowings can act as a 'sunscreen' to prevent your lawn getting dried out and scorched. Don't use a sprinkler because it can use more than 1,000 of'litres of water an hour. Instead, raise the blades of your mower and leave the grass box off as you mow. And don't worry if your grass is scorched, because it usually revives itself come the cooler, wetter weather later in the year. Remember also that if you want to plant out new plants now, they won't have as good a chance of establishing a strong root system because the ground is so dry and they are unlikely to cope as well with the drought. You will need to add a really good amount of damp organic matter such as compost or well rotted manure to get them going and will need watering in well. If you're thinking more of indoors rather than outdoors, a fresh coat of paint is the most inexpensive change you can make to a room and one which can give the most impact. Strategic lighting in the home can also transform a room. Use your local lighting specialist for the best advice

A new lampshade, or a drop fitting can make a big impact and can be enjoyed for many years to come. Maybe you could buy some new blinds or curtains to give a room a completely updated look and lift the whole ambience of a room. Using your local firm for these items is always a wise choice, as they can advise you on what would suit your room and take proper measurements. Ask about new trends and classic designs. A new fireplace can be a wonderful focal point to your home. From traditional to modern, there is a great range to choose from. Make sure your choice is in keeping with your property. Perhaps a piece of country furniture is just the thing you need to complete a room. A good piece of furniture is a wise investment. The kitchen is often the focal point of a home, and now is the perfect time of year to think of replacing or improving it. New units and replacing the cooker can make a huge difference. Use your local kitchen specialist for their expertise. Making our home and garden more attractive is occupying more and more of our time - be sure to spend that time wisely.
