THE two top mixed tennis teams in Clitheroe and ■Whalley met on Friday, and Clitheroe recorded an impressive victory to beat their local rivals for the first time in a long while, win ning six sets to two. In the firs t round of
Ravenscroft. The first set against their first opponents was characterised by errors, but the Clitheroe first pair took the set 7-6 on a tie break. The second set was equally tense, and another tie break looked on the cards, but Phil and Roger came out 7-5 winners. On the other court Steve
Pym was partnered for the first time by Andy Rose. The pair played well but were overcome by the Crow Wood team and lost the match in straight sets with in the hour. While waiting for the
other match to finish, Steve and Andy took time to get in some extra practice - this really paid off in their sec ond match. They lost the first set to the Crow Wood second pair but played with some determination to level the rubber with a second set tie break win. But unfortu nately they couldn’t sustain the momentum and lost the third. Meanwhile, Phil and
Roger were making relative ly light work of their second rubber, and won the first set easily at 6-2. But the second set was another matter - the Crows raced to an early 3-0 lead and then moved to 4-1, and i t looked like a long three-setter ahead. But the Clitheroe pair
won five games on the trot to record an excellent 6-4 second set victory and straight sets win. By this time the formidable Raven scroft serve was coming into full effect, and Phil was using the lob to good effect.
