declared the oldest agricultur al show in the country open. He also competed in show jumping events that made up a large equestrian section for horse lovers to enjoy. Specta tors enjoyed a full equestrian
time-table and a top-class field of showjumpers, who competed for the total prize money, in excess of £50,000. Every comer of the historic
ground, which belongs to show p res id en t Mr Colin Mustoe, was filled with stands offering impressive and local displays of horticulture, agri culture, arts and crafts and a good var iety of Lancashire produce. The refreshment s tan d s
proved a t r e a t with the crowds. One of Ribble Valley’s favourite ice cream producers, Huntley’s, of Samlesbury, sold th e ir del ig h ts for the f irs t time. This y e a r ’s main ring
attractions included demon strations of traditional log cutting by “Adam’s Axemen”. Formed in 1967, Adam’s Axe men is the longest established log axing team in the UK and definitely proved a hit with the Lancashire crowd. Other crowd-pleasers
included shire horses and teams, sheepdog trials, terrier racing, a harvest demonstra tion and a dedicated fishing centre, with Grindleton per sonality Martin James offer ing fishing advice and help on the banks of the River Ribble. Glitz and glamour took cen
tre stage a t the showground, thanks to th e Ladies’ Day
marquee. The popular “Cele brations of Wedding Fayre” was run over the three days and 24-year-old Erica Wild, of Lytham-St-Annes, was cro wned Miss Royal Lancashire 2006. Although show chairman
Mr Gordon Robe rts was delighted with the turnout at the three-day rural extrava ganza, he believes more people would have attended had it not been for the many sum mer festivals and events being staged elsewhere in the region. He said: “Together with
fabulous h o t weather and excellent attractions on show, we can happily say th a t the Royal Lancashire Show once again was a massive success. “We had expected approxi
m ately 60,000 people to attend and we were on target. The show itself was extremely successful with more at trac tions than ever.” Meanwhile, one H u rs t
Green farmer has been cele brating a f te r his horse was
crowned the “Best Lancashire Shire Filly” in the shire hors es’ class. Mr John Wilkinson’s yearling filly, “Haighton Charlies Girl,” scooped the title and the “Reserve Cham pion” of the Royal Lancashire Show, at its first attempt. Elsewhere, the Ribble Val
ley Borough Council won first prize for stands over 150 sq. h., after judges found it well- staffed, attractive and highly informative. The marquee was decorated
with scarecrows from the Waddington Scarecrow Festi val and children had the chance to meet and be pho tographed with Postman Pat and the Wererabbit from Wal lace and Cromit. Outside the marquee, the
council's sports development team organised sports activi ties for 600 youngsters, testing their skills in football, netball and rugby. Inside, there were stands on
tourism, sport, health and fit ness, and recycling.
