A SUCCESSFUL summer rally was held in Sabden by the Wesley Guilds of the Bolton District. Tea was provided in the Wesleyan School by the Sabden Guild and songs were rendered at intervals by Miss M. A. Entwistle. • A serious cycling accident occurred in

Barrow involving two young men, one of whom was thrown violently to the ground and sustained brain concussion. He was later taken home by Whalley police. ® Members of the Clitheroe Homing

Society sent 37 birds in the East Lan cashire Federation’s race from Nantes. In total, 7,506 birds were involved in the race with 450 owners competing for £520. The distance from Clitheroe was given as 461 miles.

Climate change: it is time to act before it is too late

Should we be bothered about climate We are told that global warming is the

change?

most important issue facing humanity today. So why are we all not taking emer gency action to do something about it? The problem seems to be that most peo

ple do not know much about it. Sure, we see it on the TV and in the papers every day. Still, people do not realise the scale of what we need to do. Perhaps we are all in denial. We just do

not want to face up to the situation. Perhaps Gleorge Bush is right that we are addicted to oil. Fossil fuels make our whole lives more comfortable. We can travel wherever we want, whenever we want. Our homes are warm and comfortable. We

can eat and drink as much as we want, whenever we want. All because of cheap oil. So, like addictions to smoking and drink

ing and over-eating we prefer to enjoy the pleasures of the moment. Why worry about lung cancer or liver

damage or diabetes or heart disease or strokes that may take a few years before we feel the pain. Even the sure knowledge of a hangover

the next day does not seem to hold people back from getting drunk! Here are some simple questions:

As I see i t . . . by Chris

Gathercole

9 Is global warming happening? 9 Is it happening because of human activ ity like burning fossil fuels: oil, coal, gas?

9 How serious is it? 9 Should we be bothered enough to do

something about it? Climate scientists are in no doubt that cli

mate change is happening and that it is a direct result of human activity. They tell us that it is a matter of great

urgency. So it is up to us to decide whether to take responsibility for cutting carbon emissions as speedily as we can. Yet there are doubters, nearly all of whom

have no credentials in climate science. Dr David Bellamy is a celebrity botanist and environmentalist who saidtwo years ago that climate change was “poppycock”. He insisted that the world’s glaciers are advanc ing when all the evidence is that that they are retreating. The TV gardener, Alan Titchmarsh, puts his lack of concern about climate change

STUDENT Miss Barbara Hayhurst passed her finals in pharmacy at Man chester University. Miss Hayhurst was a former pupil at Clitheroe Girl’s Grammar School and passed her intermediate exam ination at Blackburn Technical School. Miss Hayhurst studied for two years at Manchester University and word that she had passed was received at her home the day after she had left for her holiday. 9 A young man was waiting at the bus

stop outside the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times office when he was struck by a piece of iron, which was believed to have fallen from a passing lorry. The driver made off unaware of the mishap, while the victim was taken to hospital with a sus pected broken leg.

MEMBERS of the teaching union NAS went on strike at Ribblesdale County Sec ondary School and St Augustine’s RC School. St James’s CE Primary School was also hit by the stoppage. However, no examinations in Clitheroe were affected. 9 Billington Parish Council was trying

to curb the alarming rate of road acci dents involving children in the local area. Larkhill estate was the hot spot for the problems. With a footpath on the wrong side of the road, children were often emerging unexpectedly from the gardens. Reference was also made to a fatal acci dent in Chapel lane, Langho, involving a motor cyclist. It was felt that this was the responsibility of motorists to maintain a suitable speed on county lanes.

Matthew’s Gospel that should resonate with all of us, no matter our faith or non-faith, especially concerning the cri sis regarding Israel and the Lebanon. But where are the peace

makers as innocent civilians, including many children, are

being bombed and shelled? Both President Bush and

Prime Minister Blair claim to be Christians, and yet they seem to be quite content to play the cynical game of allowing time for the Israelis to destroy the power of the te r rorists on their borders with the criminal cost of so much collateral damage. While no one would deny

Israel’s right to defend its peo ple, might ^s not always fight

and is not the solution for a

permanent peace in the region. History shows that all wars

are a failure in the sense that they occur when dialogue

breaks down or never even starts up at all. ^But it has to be the right

kind of peace dialogue, which takes into account the con cerns and fears of both sides. In the present situation what is needed is an honest

broker, either from the United Nations or the European Union, and the action must be taken sooner rather than later before more innocent lives are lost. The kind of international

politics being played up to now leaves a sour taste in the mouth and is offensive to any right thinking person.

the King of Prussia’s Gold Medal by the Incorporated Church Building Society and the Historic Churches Preservation Trust in a ceremony at Lambeth Palace. Recently he has been involved

with work to alter and refurbish Whalley Abbey’s Conference House, as well as a re-roofing and fabric repairs’ project at Clitheroe Parish Church and his most recent initi- aitive involves converting Clitheroe’s former Grand Cinema into a per forming arts centre.

down to his natural optimism. Head in the sand more like. Then there is that well-known fount of

wisdom, Jeremy Clarkson, who just wants to have a good time and to hell with anyone who gets in his way. Why should we take the opinions of

celebrities more seriously than the combined knowledge of the world's climatologists? With sceptics like these what are ordinary

people to make of it? People say they are confused and don't know what to believe. Even intelligent, highly educated people say they do not know enough about climate change to have an opinion about it. Many people agree that the earth is

warming but put it down to natural varia tion like sunspots, the earth's tilt and orbit, or volcanoes. The climate has always changed. But this time it is different. Clima tologists are in no doubt that the present rapid warming is happening because of the greenhouse effect caused by us. One of the most useful places to start

learning more about climate change, and what we can each do about it is Mayer Hill man's Penguin book “How to Save the Plan et”. If we are to make good decisions for the

future, we need to be climate literate. There is not a moment to lose.
