Ciitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Trevor scores double victory! _^yEdward_Lee___

THE damp weather on the Whalley captain's out ing to Stand CJolf Club on Friday did not deter Trevor Thornber from picking up first prize in both the morning and afternoon competitions. The 26 stableford points

over 12 holes in the morn ing gave Thomber victory by one point from Mike Conroy, who pushed Cliff Skeats into third place after a card play-off. In the afternoon 18 hole

stableford competition, partnered b y Colin T. E l liott , 44 points was again just enough to give Thornber the first prize- from Philip Hilton and Paul Jackson (43) with Rob

Hilton and Roy Ellis (41) in third place. Saturday saw the sec

ond round of the Arthur Longworth Cup. John Heap followed his

first round of 70 with a 71 to take the trophy, fo l lowed by Neil Winckley (73+69=142), who pushed Gary

Meakin

(69+73=142) into third place after a card play-off. Steve Hill (84-16-68)

took the prize for the best round of the day, with divisional prizes going to Roy Ellis (80-10-70), Neil Winckley (82-13-69) and Geoff Mayoh (92-20-72). Andy White (76) took

the gross prize. The ELGA Mixed

Foursomes qualifier on Sunday saw Steve Shore man and Bridget Rees (93-22.5-70.5) emerge as clear winners. John Rostron, playing

with Anne Prior, and President-Elect Chris Davies, playing with his wife Celia, will make up the Whalley team for the finals at Blackburn Golf next month. Young guns Richard

Tyrell and Andrew Hee- som took the honours in Clitheroe’s fourball. Tyrell’s eagle three on

the last hole gave them 47 points and first place. Tony McGibbon f in

ished with a birdie but he and Bert Hemingway fin ished one point o f f the pace. George Stoddard start

ed with a birdie, but a par at the last proved too lit tle to raise him and Kenny Ward above fourth place. Club captain Paul Bur

rows left it to son Clive, who produced a cracking eagle at the last for five points and a 44-point total that gave them third after scrutiny of cards. Young Burrows was at

it again on Sunday when he and John Pawson totalled 44 points to ease Paul Connolly and Daniel Preedy in to second place after cards. Ted Bamborough made

light o f the changeable weather at Mytton Fold to win the monthly stable ford competition with a fine 43 points. Bamborough's score

was posted early in the day and proved impossible to catch. He was followed at a

respectable distance by John Atkinson, whose 40 points was enough to take second place after a card play-off. Divisional prizes went to

Mark Green (40) and the bang-in-form Neil Osliffe, who recorded 37 points in

Division One, Frank Tim- stall and Gordon Lucas (both with 40 points) in the Second Division and Frank Wilcox (39) and .Andrew Wills (37) in Divi sion Three. The Ladies’ Open was

also held this week at Myt ton Fold. Carole Maher emerged victorious with 36 points, closely fol lowed by Barbara Bryan with 35. Third place was taken by Ida (Jomall from Blackburn GC with 32 points. Sheila Cornwell, Edith

Child and Irene Hinks returned a nett 64.5 to win the Texas Scramble at Clitheroe. Marie Finney, Krysty-

na Taylor and Helen Cook (65.4) were second ahead of Trudy Walne, Sue Johnson and Gill Wightman. Whalley members Anne

Prior, Vivien Birtwell, Julie Stephenson and Iris Sherry totalled 70 points to win the Ladies’ Open Team event at Stonyhurst Park with 70 points. They beat club-mates

Wendy Green, Jean Dear- den, Agnes Flanagan and

garet Carrington and Joyce Kenyon were joined by Clitheroe’s Jean Bren nan and Darwen lady cap tain Margaret Booth to take third place from a Clitheroe team compris

the July Stableford by four points from Trudy Walne and Judy Kitching while Joyce Kenyon and Kathleen Hargreaves carded a nett 69.5 to win the greensomes. That saw them finish

two shots clear of Betty Austin and Gill McDon nell with Margaret McAl lester and Sheila Parman a further shot adrift. Jannette Dowdy, Gwen

Park and Judy Kitching took the honours in the August Medal while top spots in the Kath Hobbs StaWeford went to Lynne Schbles, Susan Kirk and Margaret Mc.Allester. Jean Tasker amassed 42 points to win the Celia

(8-23-65) was runner-up ahead of Alex Beet (Towneley 78-8-70). Beet’s gross score of 78

was also good enough for him to be named Daily Telegraph qualifier. Maintaining the family

theme at Clitheroe, junior members James and William Baton have sud denly appeared on the junior competitions leaderboard. James took second

place to Ben Frankland in the stableford with 40 points, the same return as William who settle for third. Sunday’s medal saw

better than a trio on 69. William claimed second

place and Tim Swarbrick took third ahead of Jacob Foley.
