Vintage club rally proves a hit despite frequent downpours

WET weather failed to dampen the spirits of those who attended the Ribble Valley Vintage Club Rally at the week

end. The annual rally, which

has been a regular feature in the area for 18 years now, was held on a showfield off the A59 at Sawley Brow on Saturday and Sunday. Despite the rain and a re

duced turnout, many still enjoyed the event, which is known as one of the most friendly rallies around. Exhibits included 80 vin

Rod Gregg, said; “We were down on exhibitors and joe public, which was all due to the weather.” Mr Gregg thanked every

one involved in organising the event, particularly the Burnley Squadron of the Air Training Corps, for mar shalling the car parking, and the Clitheroe St John Am bulance for their watchful presence on the field. Anyone wanting to know

Help sought in tracing lost First World War heroes

by Margaret Parsons

A SABDEN man is hoping East Lancashire people will help him find the missing links in his research into the heroes of his home village who died in the two

great wars. Mr Simon Mount (42) is a member

of the Sabden War Memorial Trust which is currently fund-raising to pro vide the village with its first perma nent outside memorial, to be sited on the rose garden in the centre. The cause is close to his heart

because for many years he has been compiling a roll of honour of those heroes who gave their lives in conflict and either lived or worked in Sabden when they were called up or volun teered. But of the 72 men who died, some

whose names appear on plaques- inside St Nicholas’s Church and Sab den Primary School, he is still seeking details of eight who died in the First World War. He wants to know more of their details to include them in a memorial booklet that he is produc ing. If it realises any profits it will help with fund-raising for the memo rial which is now in the planning stage and is out to tender. There are 19 men who died with

Sabden connections whose names are not recorded on the plaques but the eight men who he would like to know more details about are: • Preston-born Pte 28823 Robert

McGahey who lived in Sabden and enlisted with the 13th Battalion King’s (Liverpool Regiment). He died in Flanders field in France on July 14th 1916 but strangely his name does not appear on either of the two plaques in the village. • Pte 19702 Richard Atkinson,

SIMON MOUNT is producing a

booklet about Sabden's War heroes (G21070G/3)

who was born in Sabden, enlisted in Darwen and served in Flanders with the 2/4th battalion of the East Lan cashire Regiment and died from his wounds on November 25th 1917. His name also does not appear on either memorial plaque. O Sabden-born Pte 204891 Harry

Nelson enlisted in Salford, Manches ter, with the 1st Battalion the Lan cashire Fusiliers, and was killed in action in France on April 11th 1918. His name appears on one of the vil

lage plaques. • Gunner 175159 Harry Halstead

was born in Sabden and enlisted in Nelson with the Royal Garrison Artillery. He died in Mesopotamia on

June 25th 1918 and his name is not

recorded. • Pte 3173 George Dawes was bom

in Barrow-in-Fumess, enlisted in Pre ston with the 8th battalion King’s (Liverpool Regiment) and was the husband of Alice Ann Moorhouse of Moor Lane, Padiham. He was killed in action in Prance on June 16th 1915 and must have worked in Sabden because his name appears on the plaque in St Nicholas’s Church. • Pte 34326 John Thompson was a

Padiham man who is believed to have worked in or had close connections with Sabden because his name appears on both the village plaques. He enlisted in Preston with the 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment and was killed in action in Flanders on April 9th 1917. • Also Padiham born was Pte 101935 John James Grasshorn Fort of the Royal Army Medical Corps. He enlisted in Burnley and served in Palestine and died on October 30th 1918. His name appears on the plaque in Sabden Primary School. • The plaque in the parish church

bears the name of Pte 32120 Archibald Kitson Simpson, who was bom in Firsby, Lincolnshire, and lived in Accrington when he was killed in

. action in France on October 8th 1918. He had enlisted in Preston with the l/5th battalion (Territorial Force) Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He is also on the Accrington Roll of Honour and is thought to have worked in Sabden. If anyone knows anything more

about these men Mr Mount, of Sab den Brook Court, would like to hear from them. He can be contacted on 01282 778635 in the afternoon and evenings.

Red Pump’s history is sought by owners

IT could be one of the oldest in the Ribble Valley, but now its owners need the help of a local his torian to find out just how old. The Red Pump Inn, at Bashall

Eaves, is believed to date from around 1756, but parts of the his toric hostelry could be even older. Its owners for the past year, Mar tina and Jonathan Myerscough, have spent a great deal of time and effort restoring the Red Pump to a traditional country inn, much to the delight of a growing army of customers. The couple love the pub, but are

often embarrassed when visitors ask them about its history, because they don’t really know that much about it. “We have just created a website

and are working on other promo tional material and we really want to include some of the Red Pump’s history,” said Martina. “We think it is one of the oldest pubs in the Ribble Valley - around 250 years old - but it could be older. We know bits and pieces from what the locals have told us, but we want to compile a defini tive history and we really need a good local historian to help us out.” As part of the renovation. Mar

tina and Jonathan have also refur bished three guest rooms at the inn and would like to give them names connected in some way to its history. Anyone who might already

know the history of the pub, or who is keen to research it, can con tact Martina and Jonathan at The Red Pump Inn on 01254 826227.
