Daredevil stunt aids children’s hospital
by Faiza Afzaal
A DAREDEVIL solicitor has raised a massive £3,500 towards providing vital life-sav ing equipment for a children’s
: hospital which helped save her teenage niece’s life.
- Brave Amanda Meadows, a
partner at Houldsworths Solicitors, was catapulted 200 feet through the air in just 1.4 seconds after signing up for the Ejection Seat Reverse Bungee Challenge. . The challenge was aimed at rais- •
ing much-needed funds for the Joe
Jafte.Renal.Unit at Pendlebury Children’s Hospital in Manchester, whose medical staff operated on Amanda’s 15-year-old niece, Emma, when she underwent a kid ney transplant last year. ■ Officials at the hospital have said
that the amount raised is the high est so far from a bungee jump. Amanda was joined by her best
friend, Karen Hall, of Bolton, who she trained with to become a solici tor. She says she has been over whelmed by the support from peo ple who donated generously for the. deserving cause. She commented: “I am delighted
with the amount raised and would like to thank everyone who donat ed. ' '• .
“Lots of local businesses spon
sored me and people came into the office to pledge support. “I really enjoyed the bungee
jump and it was not as bad as I expected.” ,
• Amanda, of Queensway,
Waddington, expressed particular gratitude to members of Clitheroe Round Table, who donated £500 towards the good cause. Mr Chris Longshaw, appeal co
ordinator at the unit, said: “It is a tremendous effort; It is only through people like Amanda that we can continue to provide desper ately needed equipment for chil dren at the hospital. “I am pleased to say it is the
highest amount anyone has raised from a bungee jump.” Emma is a pupil at St Augus-. i
tine’s RC High School, Billington. Although she still visits the hospi-
.tal for regular check-ups, she is making great progress since the transplant and is enjoying life as normal. The daughter of Joanne and Frank Romasanta, she plans to train as a solicitor after leaving school, following in the footsteps of her grandfather John Houldsworth and her aunt, Amanda. Our picture shows Amanda with
Emma presenting the cheque to representatives from the Manches ter hospital. (S100306/3)
