\ IN the jungle, the Blighty jungle, the lion’s waking up! With the onset of spring,

things are stirring in the grasslands of Knowsely Safari Park, where keepers are busy making final preparations for their 36th summer season. This week the Ciitheroe Advertiser and Times has five family tickets, each worth £30, to give away to lucky winners

; in a Knowsley Sadari Park Competition . V

Last year more than

. 500,000 people visited the Merseyside park and in 2006, with a range of new attractions on offer, park bosses are hoping for anoth er record breaking year. Visitors could be lucky

enough to see the park’s first female baby rhino, Binta, bom last November and expected to take her first tentative steps out doors if the weather. becomes a little warmer.

She spent the winter snug gled up in the rhino house waiting for the warmer weather so she can join her mum and the park’s other five white rhino outside. The park is introducing

three new fairground rides with the first - The Honey Pot Bears - already open and the Minstrel and Jun gle Safari rides due to open in time for Easter. Cheeky.

mascot Stanley the Lion will also be out and about.

■ entertaining the younger members of the family in . the amusement park area. 'The 550-acre park on the

Earl of Derby’s estate offers a unique five-mile safari

. drive aJong roads lined with more than 500 exotic ani mals from all over the globe, including rhinos, camels,, buffalo, bison, wildebeest, lions, tigers, zebra, monkeys, deer, antelopes and wallabies. Although the 120-strong troop of baboons remains one of. the most popular attractions, a big plus point for Knowsley is that it now offers an alternative car- friendly route around the outside of the monkey jun gle for those wishing to avoid any potential damage to their vehicle. ; Other must-see attrac

tions a t the park include sealion and exotic bird

. shows, new regular bird of prey displays, a walka- round animal area where giraffe, meerkats, otters and elephants -. can be viewed at close quarters. •Knowsley’s bug house

offers everything from . snakes to lizards and cock roaches, in stark contrast to the goats, lambs, horses and cattle a t the Children’s Lake Farm. As well as exot

Russian com ed y is tran sp o r ted to Lancashire s e t t in g

A Little Local Difficulty; Burnley Garrick Club

PHILIP GOULDING’S version of Gogol’s classic Russian comedy “The Government Inspector”, transports the setting to a Lancashire town, per haps even Burnley itself, in the Victorian era. He has retained much of the original .satire, but

given the production a humorous new twist by using a wonderfully comic dialect and recognis able characters. Mayor Wyndham-Pitt (Gordon Ingleby) is a

man with his own interests firmly in mind. He runs the town with Postmaster Pepys (David Mackinlay), Superintendent of Schools, Rose Quigley (Susan Mullen), Mr and Mrs Robson

(Mick Dawson and Kathleen Riley), Philip Stein, Director of Charities (Nigel Catterall) and Police Chief Markham (David Evans). Together they all have a nice little operation

going! But they are filled with dread at the prospect of a government inspector who may uncover all their little shenanigans. Inevitably in a comedy they fasten upon the

wrong man, an impoverished visitor to the town John Petty (Barry Beckett), accompanied by hi: servant (Stephen Dixon) The stage set is skilfully adapted, from tlu

Mayor’s Parlour to the dingy hovel where Pettj stays at first and John Cummings and Howarc Rogers’ direction is well paced.
