A MAN who went to his mother’s home to record a boxing match being broadcast in the early hours ended up having a fight of his own after she called the police. Blackburn magistrates heard that Paul John

Mooney squared up to an officer before punching him repeatedly. Mopney (42), of Millthome House, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to police assault. He was remanded on bail for the preparation of a pre-sen

tence report. Mr Scott Ainge (prosecuting) said police were called by Mooney's mother because of his behaviour towards her.

' - . : “It was established he had gone to her home to

record a boxing match, but she said he was no longer welcome,” said Mr Ainge. “He was given the oppor tunity to set the video and then leave and initially offered no resistance.”

; ■As Mooney was being escorted down the hallway

he tripped over a bicycle and immediately fac^ the officer and punched him three or four times. Thvo offi cers were able to restrain him and when he was inter viewed at the police station he conceded that the police had been polite and treated him well. Mr Jonathan Taylor (defending) said Mooney

wanted to set up the video equipment and then leave. “He knows the police officer was doing his job and he shouldn't have been assaulted.”

College relics star on US

TV networks

PRICELESS religious relics from Stony- hurst College a’re causing a stir in the Unit ed States - so much so that its curator is appearing on a TV network with viewers all over the world. The relics form the major part of an exhi

bition at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, which focuses on the preservation of religious objects by Catholics during the “penal times” under British Law. Such is the importance of the Stonyhurst artefacts that curator Jan Graf- fius travelled to the States with them. “It w'as a great responsibility because-

they are simply irreplaceable, but every thing went according to plan and they all arrived safely,” said Jan. Among the Stonyhurst relics on display

, are a-trunk and vestments owned by St Edmund Arrowsmith, who was executed in 1628, a chasuble commissioned by King Henry VII, a chasuble embroidered by Helena Win tour (daughter'of one of the Gunpowder Plotters), an alabaster altar- piece, oil on copper paintings that decorat-; ed the Shireburn Chapel, several illuminat ed medieval Book of Hours, a pocket shrine made in 1623 and an illustration from a 1582 book showing Edmund Campion and his companions being dragged on hurdles to their execution. The exhibition contains more than 60 '

objects, mostly from Jesuit institutions across the United States and in England. “These objects, acquired at great risk,

embodied the faithful’s bonds with God, church tradition and each other,” said Niko las Markantonatos, the Assistant Director of Media Relations at Holy Cross. “When, suppressed, many Catholics during this period came to identify their faith with the prayer books, paintings, and objects of rit ual such as Mass vestments and chalices that they were able to obtain or to hide.” Over the years Stonyhurst has become a .

treasure trove of these historically signifi cant relics and 54 were packed up by spe-- cialist shippers at the college and Jan was at Holy Cross to supervise the unpacking. While she was in the States, she was

interviewed by Pr Mitch Pakwa, of Eternal ■Word Television Network. Interspersed

with views of the splendid old college build ings, the programme lasts for an hour and . is being broadcast from the US on Wednes- day, April 12th, and from London on SKY

(channel number 680) on Tuesday, April 18th. Our picture shows curator Jan Graffius
