. STRONG links between the Round Tables of B r i ta in and Ireland and the Antho ny Nolan T ru s t
were.rein-. forced when C i ith e ro e Round Table handed over a cheque for £750 to th e Trust’s area appeals manag er Peter Crampton. The Anthony Nolan Trust
was instigated by Shirley ; Nolan, a mother of a child with a rare disease requiring a bone
marrow.transplant. Sadly her son Anthony died in 1979 with out ever receiving the trans plant he needed, but his legacy . lives on in the UK’s most suc cessful bone marrow donor reg- ' ister. The Trust now provides lifesaving donors for patients in need of a bone marrow trans plant. Since 1974 they have helped to give more than 4,000 children and adults a new chance of life. The Round Table has sup- ■
ported the Anthony Nolan Trust from the very beginning
and helped raise awareness in the early stages. One massive recruitment drive led by Nor wich Round Table helped gain more than 100,000 donors for the register. The Trust is always looking for volunteers to go on the register, but with a cost of around £70 per donor for tissue typing and other scientific tests, the Trust also needs financial assistance. . ■ . Having been inspired by the
success stories of the past few years and watching a DVD fea turing some of the lives that have been “taken back” from Leukaemia, the members of Ciitheroe Round Table are keen to continue their association with the Trust and plans are already being laid for possible future events. ■ Pictured are Ciitheroe Round
Table’s Community Service Officer Richard Pallister (left) and Chairman Roger Spensley (right) presenting the £750 cheque to Peter Crampton, of the Anthony Nolan Trust, (s)

CHILDREN raised more than ; £1,000 in just 15 minutes at Oakhill College, Whalley.
;: The preparatory school held a
. sp'onsored water race on Lent • Fast Day. The teams not only raised a
' lot of money for a worthwhile - cause in Peru’s capital, Lima, r but discovered just how difficult life can be for children in other ■ partsof the world. .
. CAFOD, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, is the international aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, sharing, in the
. Church’s task of transforming • the world to reflect the Kingdom : of God, through solidarity with
the poor and action for justice. One of their current fund-raising projects is focusing on a water project in Peru's capital, Lima, to bring water right into the ■homes of a dusty shantytown on the'outskirts of the city called San Juan de Lurigancho. During the race, each child
was a member of a team whose job it was to carry a bucket of water back and forth across the playground. This mirrors what the locals in
Lima have to do each day by carrying enormous buckets of water into their village. Our picture shows some of the
pupils who took part in the race, (s)
