A welcome for ‘Ming’ ®

LEADING . Liberal * Democrats in the Ribble Valley have welcomed the election of Sir Menzies

Campbell as their new party leader. Sir Menzies - known as

“Ming” - polled 57% of party members’ votes, well

ahead of rivals Chris Huhne and Simon Hughes

in the three-horse race. He is widely acknowledged as

: a safe pair of hands to lead the party after a series of

headline-grabbing reports, including former leader Charles Kennedy’s admis sion of a drink problem, which led to his stepping down.

: His election was wel

comed by Coun. Frank Dyson, leader of the Liber

al-Democrats on Ribble Valley Borough Council, and by Ribble Valley’s Lib- eral-Democrat Mayor, Coun. Mary Robinson, who both backed Sir Men zies in the election. Coun. Dyson said of the

election result: “I celebrate it and welcome it. He has promised to lead us as a party which will vie with Labour and the Conserva tives. We look forward to a more competitive future.” Coun. Robinson echoed

those sentiments, saying: I ’m very pleased at Ming’s election as party leader. I thought he was the right man for the job.

He has the maturity and experience and the ability to pull the party;4;pgether

Land take it forwaidi’i^i ■ • S': Among the'firstUo,wel come Sir Menzies\ victory was Nortl^::West MEP Chris Davies, leader of the Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament, and whose. ■ constituency includes Ribble Valley. He told the Clitheroe Adver tiser: “I am delighted with the result. Ming Campbell is one of the most respon sible politicians in Britain. He combines common- sense with passionate sup port for liberal values and human rights.
