Let my mistakes act as warning to others

by Natalie Cox.

A CON'VICTED drink^driver, who was more than four times over the legal limit on a week day afternoon is trying to piece her life back together.

. Now living ivith the consequences of her actions, single mum Niki Parker wants to use her own; heartache to try to reach out to others.

'

: 'Visibly upset as she spoke to the Clitheroe Adver tiser and Times about the situation she now finds

■ herself in, Niki hopes her story will touch the heart of other people in the Ribble Valley who live with • depression.

V One Friday afternoon in February, Niki, who has; a six-year-old son,; was arrested for drink driving after she attracted the attention of a police officer as she struggled to park her car in what was described as a large space.

but made her the subject of a community supervi sion order for 18 months, on condition that she attends the dnnk-impaired driwng programme, and she was banned from driving for three years. , Speaking this week, Niki said: “Everyone has bad experiences but not everyone turns to the bottle. The point I want to get across is that I am not a bad person, but so much has happened to me m a short space of time that I thought dnnking was the only - solution - but I know it isn’t.”

{ reRSONAL;READING$i CALL^; A one-time successful career woman, who was

happily married ivith a young child, Niki has been battling with depression for years. ; > .“I went back to work three months after the

" birth of .my son, I was hurting so much inside because I felt so alone and distant from people. I feel guilty for putting work before my baby.: .; “I don’t want to come across as the victim, get-

• ting in the car was wrong and I apologise for that, • but I want people to understand what depression is. It is an illness that never goes away.”- z '

. ;

: ■ ; As she fought her illness, Niki saw her marriage fail, and then she was arrested an'd punished for drink-driving.

. ; After her court appearance she took the big step of seeking help through an alcohol rehabilitation

Magistrates decided not to send Niki to prison, '

- programme. She paid almost £4,000 for a week-long - stay at The Priory clinic in Preston, i On the day she was due to leave, feeling on top of . _ the world, she ivitnessed a fatal accident. Niki tried

; in vain to resuscitate a motorcyclist who then died in her arms.

Now from her home in Chtheroe she is coming to

terms with all that has happened to her and trying to pick up the pieces, put it all behind her and move forward. But the one mesisage she wants to get across to

. our readers is aimed at people in relationships. Niki wants to urge partners, husbands and ivives

to look out for the signs of depression, admit what is happening and seek the appropriate help.

As well as admitting that she. was suffering with

depression, Niki herself has also admitted to having a drink problem. “I enjoyed a social drink until I

. eral weeks - 1 couldn’t stand the smell of alcohol.' But I took to the bottle when I realised what my life was like, how empty I felt inside. I thought it would make me feel better. I was a professional PA on the outside, but on the inside I was crying out for help. I could not talk to anyone, I used to come home and

had my baby then after that I did not drink for sev-

. feel I was crying or dying inside and I wanted help." ^ The night before she was caught drink-driving in Clitheroe, she had drunk two or three glasses of

'. wine before going to bed. She woke about 3 a.m. and instead of making a cup of coffee she got a bottle of ■

; wine: ‘‘I felt the alcohol would numb the pain.” ■ After coming back from the school run she opened another bottle, thus being four times over the limit. With the full support of her parents, Niki is now

trying to get her life back together:-"! realised I could not carry on, this was a wake-up call. I have lost the respect of friends and colleagues and per haps they are embarrassed or ashamed of me. At the end of the day what I did was wrong. I am not asking for sympathy, but I want people to under stand what depression is all about. Depression is an illness that never goes away. I believe if my husband and I had admitted together what was happening we would have got help sooner and I would not be where I am today.” -
