Old furniture is given new lease of life

UNWANTED furniture and large household appliances can be given a second lease of life thanks to a char itable service extending into the Ribble Valley. The H3mdbum Used Furniture Store

has been established in Accrington for several years, serving people in need within the area It has provided furniture and “white

goods” such as fridges and washing machines to enhance people’s quality of

^ d fe . The service has previously been

delivered by volunteers and operated on one day per week, which proved insuffi cient to meet the demand. Having now secured Government and European funding, it has been able to employ staff and run the project full time. It is also able to extend into Ribble

Valley, replacing the similar service pre viously run by a church group, but which ceased some time ago. Collections are generally carried out

on Thursdays, but can be done at other times by special arrangement.

Items sought by theHyndbum Used

Furniture Store include: • Settees, armchairs and other furni

ture, but suites must have fire safety labels • Beds, bedding and soft furnishings • Washing machines and tumble

dryers O Vacuum cleaners • Cookers • Kitchen equipment The service also collects white goods

that are broken, which it then repairs or recycles, easing the strain on landfill. All donated items are redistributed to

people in need in East Lancashire, giv ing them a better start in life, and are greatly appreciated. The group has also secured a large

number of computers to help people upgrade their skills and improve their employment prospects in almost any work environment. Anyone who has items to donate to

the group can telephone the Hyndbum Used Furniture Store on 01254 393784 or, for more information, visit its web site at: www.hufs.co.uk

Home Start supporters meet charity’s founder

SUPPORTERS of Home-Start Rib ble Valley met the charity’s founder. Margaret Harrison CBE, who

started the organisation 33 years ago, was in Ciitheroe for the local branch’s annual meeting. She spoke about the value and sup

port given by Home-Start and its vol unteers to families with children under the age of five and about the need to continue attracting funding. The eighth annual meeting for

Home-Start Ribble Valley took place in the council chamber and was well supported. It was attended by 45 peo-

pie, including civic dignitaries repre senting the Ribble Valley, Ciitheroe and Longridge. Committee members were re

appointed, including the Rev. Chris Cheeseman, who again agreed to take on the role of chairman. A new volunteers course started this

week and anyone interested in finding out more should contact Home-Start Ribble Valley on 01254 825955. Margaret Harrison is pictured with

Expert Stan shows club members his tricks of colour

A FELLOW of the Royal Pho tographic Society was the guest of Ribblesdale Camera Club. Mr Stan White, of Leyland,

achieved his Licentiate, Associ ate and Fellowship of the socie ty in well under three years - possibly one of the fastest on record. He first experimented using

Photoshop because, as a railway photographer, he was frustrated by the “ragbag” of carriage colours on steam excursions and the use of a stripped out diesel locomotive just behind the engine to provide electrical heat ing. He also showed a “before and after” photo where he had changed the diesel for another coach and the train was all the same colour, which he said was more pleasant to look at. The talk showed a selection of

superb pictorial prints and con cluded with a demonstration of how he tidies up pictures on the computer to make exhibition winners. The next meeting, on Novem

ber 7th, will be a presentation by member Mike Caddy, who will show natural history photo graphs unchanged by a comput er.

LifeLine defends against hangovers before they start. The activated charcoal acts like a sponge, absorbing the elements in beer, wine and spirits which cause hangovers. The calcium carbonate settles the stomach,

vitamin B reduces some of the symptoms and vitamin C helps revive the body.
