Popular speaker on his 32nd visit
CLITHEROE Naturalists’ first lecture of the winter season was given by Gordon i Yates on his 32nd visit. He illustrated his talk with a film “Bird' Habitat - Pennies and Scotland”, which'
covered Lancashire, the Lakes, Bowland j and south-west Scotland.
Lancashire’s flat-roofed industrial build ings now provide safe nesting sites for lap wings and golden plovers, and mill lodges have always been the habitats of great crested grebes, datchets and herons. In Mr Yates’ own garden robins nest in the hang ing baskets and use his daughters’ roller- : skates and crash helmets. A fleeting visit to the Lake District
showed pictures of jays stealing acorns and t the lesser spotted woodpecker.

Dreaming of a green Christmas don’t forget goodwill to planet
CHRISTMAS may be a time of goodwill to all men, b u t it sometimes feels as though that goodwill does not extend to the planet. Friends of the Earth estimate
that every December, Britons will get through somewhere in the region of I billion Christmas cards, 83 square kilometres of wrapping paper, an extra 750 million bottles and glass containers, 500 million drink cans and half a million Christmas trees - nearly all of which will end up as landfill come twelfth night. And with all that waste, it's little
wonder that more people are begin ning to think far more carefully about saving resources over the fes tive period, but trying to organise yourself a very merry green Christ-

Although recycled cards and
presents are available, it's not always easy to find them on the high street, and as there's so much pressure now to buy more a t Christmas, cutting back to help the environment can leave you feeling like Ebenezer Scrooge. However, all is not lost and just
by following a few simple guide lines, it is possible to stay green as well as enter into the festive spirit.
PRESENTS When you are out Christmas
shopping, remember to take a large reusable shopping bag or basket with you.
Don't accept any plastic bags you feel you don't need and don't
buy anything you think is exces sively packaged. As an alternative to giving some
one another object, think about treating friends and relatives to a night at the theatre, a day at a spa, or membership to a charity or an organisation like the National Trust. Not only are these 'experience'
presents thoughtful and unusual, they don't require lots of unneces sary packaging either. If you do decide on a more tradi
tional form of present, then look for something durable that isn't as reliant on disposable components. If you're buying electrical items,
check that they run off the mains or use rechargeable batteries - 95 % of the batteries used in Britain are

any unwanted pres ents this year and there's no tactful way you can take them back for a refund, then why not take them to your local charity shop? I t may seem
ungrateful, but at least it means they will get plenty of use in an appreciative home, instead of being left to fester at the back of your wardrobe. And if you're pop
