Camcorder club is to record local river life
RIVER life throughout the year
■a is being recorded by the Ribble Valley Camcorder Club. The footage will cover environ
mental issues and river wildlife. The gas pipeline, which is currently being installed from Harrogate to Lancaster, is also being filmed to provide a piece of local history. Members are also hoping to
undertake projects to record the work of local industries. Last month the group had a visit
from Richard Currie, who is the local representative of the Institute of Amateur Cinematographers, the representative body of amateur film-makers, of which the Ribble
^
..Valley Camcorder Club is a mem ber.
Mr Currie gave members an
update on the history and purpose of lAC and the current law regard ing copyright on music and the recording licences which the lAC can supply to cover a wide range of needs. The lAC has the oldest ama teur film library in the world, which goes back over 74 years and is kept in a vault in East Anglia. It is avail able to all lAC members. Film festivals and competitions
are held throughout the year, both locally and worldwide, with the
local one being at Padiham in April. Training courses are held regular
ly and technical advice is given on many topics and there is also a com prehensive website with self-help forums. The road show was con cluded with a showing of several library films, which were both entertaining and educational, giv ing members many ideas for future films. At the latest meeting, a film pro
duced by chairman Ken Brass was shown. This featured the Bowland Wild Boar Park and he highlighted the film shots obtained by using unusual camera angles and posi tions by the use of booms and spe cial camera mounting arrange ments. By these methods the camera
was able to take shots of animals at their own level and close up without disturbing them and without the obstructions of fences and barriers. A selection of camera mounting
equipment was shown to members with a description of the method of operation. The club has recently purchased some new video equip ment and the new Adobe Elements editing programme. Using this equipment, Malcolm Fox demonstrated the methods cre
ating multiple images on the screen and of merging several images with out the benefit of a green screen, which generated much discussion and members offering ideas on alternative methods. These teach-ins are very popular
at the meetings, especially for the members new to the club and to editing. A spoof film was shown, taken by
Malcolm Fox, David Perkins and Denis Rostron, which showed a local old people’s club being used as a massage parlour. A second one, by Doug Brownrigg, Philip Bailey and Richard Dugdale, showed a run-off between a motorcycle and a bicycle, which had a humorous ending. Films are currently being pro
duced for the Christmas show on December 8th at the Social Centre in the Catholic Hall on Lowergate. The club is meeting again tonight
at 7-30 p.m. at the Pendle Club, Lowergate, when a representative from a recorded music supplier will give a talk and a demonstration. This is to be followed by a short film session and discussion. • Details about the club can be
obtained from Ken Brass on 01200 423169 or, alternatively, via e-mail to

brated by collecting rubbish! Hundreds of plastic carrier bags were
brought to Mass on Sunday morning and in exchange the children — and their par ents —were given re-usable ones provided jointly by the parishes of Mellor, Balder- stone and Osbaldeston. Not only are the children aiming to reduce their use of plastic bags, each
child in school made an individual pledge to help protect the environment. Pledges ranged from walking more
often, rather than travelling in a car, and turning lights off when leaving a room, to recycling toys that are outgrown and helping plant more flowers in the garden. Following the Harvest Mass, flowers
from the youngest children in school were distributed to housebound parishioners. Our picture shows some of the St
