however, one se c t ion o f society was being bypassed. Disa bled p e o p le are one o f the
groups that can benefit most from access to a ca r a n d y e t they were not getting th a t access. A s a re su lt , m a n y were h ou s e
bound for long periods and to ta l ly d e p e n d e n t o n o th e r s fo r th e ir mobility. I t was in a bid to address th is p r o b lem t h a t in 1978 th e Motability Scheme was born. Since its in c e p t io n , M o ta b i l ity
has helped around 700,000 disabled p eople and th e ir families to g a in access to a car in the UK. I t broke with the previous trend
o f on ly g iv in g g ov ernmen t assis tance to disabled people who could drive themselves b y helping people
regardless o f their a b ility to drive. W ith the aid o f Motabiltiy, for the f ir s t t im e , d is a b le d p e op le w h o might be on limited incomes were ab le to a f fo rd a g o o d -q u a l ity ca r w ith insurance, maintenance and breakdown cov e r all taken care of. T he im pa c t was dramatic and the M o ta b i l ity Scheme, along wdth all the people it has helped, has never
looked back. M o ta b i l i t y is a s im ple idea, a t
h e a r t a n d i t w o r k s b y b r in g in g together a number o f key elements. T h e government, ca r manufactur ers, car dealers and specialist vehi c le c on v e r te r s a l l com e to g e th e r w ith th e M o ta b i l i t y - r e g i s t e r e d charity in a way tha t is beneficial to all concerned and, most important ly, to disabled p e o p le around th e
country. There are m o re than 1.5million
people in the U K who quality tor the Higher R a te M ob i l ity Compo n en t o f D i s a b i l i t y L iv in g Allowance. T h is m o n e y is awarded b y th e Government and the recipients are
free to use it as th e y want. Motabil ity provides these people with the o p t ion o f p a y in g the ir a llowance into the scheme in order to finance a new car a n d o f th e 1 .5m i l l ion , 400,000 have taken Mota bility up
on their offer. M o t a b i l i t y O p e ra t io n s is th e
principal service provider to M o ta bility. I t neg o t ia te s contracts with th e m a jo r m o t o r m an u fa c tu re r s and undertakes the leasing or sale o f cars to disabled people. As a n o t - fo r -p r o f it organisation
