MOTOR MATTERS THE huge increase in school run jour-

^^?7neys has brought with it an unwanted consequence of almost 7,000 related deaths and injuries a year. More than 200 of these

deaths are children. The insurer More Than believes th a t

reducing school run journeys by 10% would reduce the death toll and injuries by up to 190 a year. This was one of a number of find ings from a new Motoring Risk Report pro

duced by the insurer. More Than’s report also suggests that the

Government’s plans to review current school transport trends, including extending the tra ditional school run period of 8 to 9 a.m. to 7 to 10 a.m., could reduce congestion by two thirds and reduce casualties by 304%. The increasing number of children being

driven to school means that roads are becom ing more and more congested between 8 and

9 a.m. The study found that, in 2003,12% of cars

travelling during this period were taking chil

dren to school. It also identified that 40% of primary chil

dren are now regularly driven to school, with 20% of secondary pupils also receiving a lift to their place of education. In 1980, four out of 10 households had no

regular access to a car and only one in 10 households had two or more cars. By 2002, these figures had changed dramatically, with car access for households up 14% and over a quarter of households in the UK having two

or more vehicles. More Than will be passing the report and

its findings on to the Department for Trans port and is keen to work with interested par ties to make our roads safer.

Atlantic. Just about the only market sector

to have escaped this rather sneering attitude is that of big 4x4s, vehicles that sell in multitudes Stateside and enjoy some success here. Although the most familiar name

to many will be Jeep, a more presti gious brand is looking to muscle in on the action. Cadillac, that most quintessentially American auto manufacturer, has established itself across the pond with big 4x4s such as the Escalade, one of the most name-checked cars in rap and R’n’B singles, and is now offering the slightly more accessible SRX to British buyers. At first glance, the SRX looks not

A PROFESSOR from Salford Universi ty, Rose Baker, believes that it is now inevitable that the average motorist will be

unlike the Escalade, with slab sided flanks and bold, edgy detailing around the front lights and grille area, but its stance is quite different to the pumped-up look of most 4x4s. Instead it adopts a low-rider look

that is almost akin to a big MPV- style vehicle. Those who buy 4x4s for the commanding view of the road ahead will feel a little disap-

pointed by the SRX’s car-like alti tude. The flipside of this is that the SRX features a lower centre of grav ity than most competitors. This, in turn, should translate into the sort of handling that has escaped many big 4x4s, but the SRX is set up for comfort. The SRX absorbs typical motor

way expansion joints with a hushed composure and renders potholed B- roads a complete irrelevance. I t is

easy to find yourself parked atop kerbs without realising you have mounted the pavement, such is the absorption of the SRX’s springing. Buy an SRX and you are going to

have to get used to pouring unleaded down its neck at a fair rate, as nei ther of the two engines is particular ly economical. The entry-level engine is a 254 b.h.p. 3.6-litre V6, although most buyers will doubtless go the whole hog and plump for the

321 b.h.p. 4.6-litre V8 version. This delivers some serious straightline speed, dispatching the sprint to 60 m.p.h. in 7.2 seconds, the bluff front only failing to punch a big hole through the airstream at 140 m.p.h. The Cadillac SRX lacks the last

few per cent of finish some buyers will look for, and its lack of a diesel engine option will also preclude it from the shortlists of many other prospective purchasers.
