Agencies unite to give a leg up to businesses
WOULD-BE entrepreneurs in the Ribble Valley are being promised a better deal for their new and growing small businesses. Business support agencies working in the
area have come together with the aim of providing an improved service to the next generation of "Richard Bransons . The agencies, who all provide Business
Link services, together with private sector professionals, were brought together by Ribble Valley Enterprise Agency which will be taking a key role in co-ordinating the support that is so vital to smaller busi-
I16SS6S*“There are so many different agencies providing help that it is difficult for people to know where to turn,” said executive
director Aileen Evans. “Each organisation has its own strengths
and can provide invaluable advice and practical assistance, but I appreciate it can look a complex and bewildering process for
the businessman or woman. ‘We have a shared vision of rural regen
eration and the role it can play in building a strong local economy. The meeting also provided a very useful opportunity to hear the views on our services from the people working in areas such as accountancy,
banking and insurance.” Ribble Valley Enterprise Agency will
direct people to the most appropriate source of assistance which can range from advice on accounts and marketing to grants and investment packages. The agencies taking part were Ribble
Valley Enterprise Agency, Ribble Valley Borough Council, Business Link, Clitheroe The Future, Lancashire Rural Futures, Northern Rural Partnership and Trinity
Partnership. Appropriately, the meeting took place at , , ,.
Bashall Barn, the farm shop and confer ence centre set up by Simon Barnes who has been supported by the Ribble Valley Enterprise Agency.
First steps towards building new waste site
THE first step has been taken towards the creation of a Waste Transfer Station
in the Ribble Valley. Members of the borough’s
Community Committee have agreed in principle that a WTS be built at the Salthill Depot in Lincoln Way, in a joint project with Lancashire County Cornell. However, the decision does not mean that the
scheme will definitely pro ceed, as the financial impli cations are being reviewed as part of the council s cur rent on-going budget pro cess. Several other key deci sions about the scheme will also have to be made. The council’s engineering
manager Mr Graham dag ger described last week s decision as “one piece of a big jigsaw”. He added that
as well as looking at the financial implications, the matter has also to be dis cussed by Lancashire Coun ty Council’s Planning Com mittee next month and by Ribble Valley’s planning committee, which will also put forward its observations and recommendations. However, the final recom mendation will ultimately be made at county level.

Independent schools of all types
INDEPENDENT schools are ones which receive no direct income from state sources. Their funding comes large ly from fees paid by parents. For centuries, inde
pendent schools have provided a first-class education for chil dren, many of whom have gone on to make a significant contri bution to national life. There are indepen
dent schools of all types - selective and non-selective, board
ing and day, large and small, mixed and single sex, urban and rural. These schools ensure the availabili ty of an education distinct from tha t provided by the state. The Indepen dent Schools Infor mation Service was founded in 1965 and became a national organisation in 1972. Its two aims are: • To answer par
ents' questions about independent schools and help them with educational prob lems.

bus links and if you like the look of a school, but it seems difficult to get to, check whether it runs its own bus service. If not, there may
